Huge fold at the WSOPE

We have the latest from the World Series of Poker Europe including two more double winners and Daniel Negreanu could take the POY lead.

Huge fold from Kahle Burns

Probably the hand of the WSOPE so far came heads-up yesterday in the €25,500 High Roller as Australian Kahle Burns soul read Sam Trickett.

Burns went on to win this event and his first bracelet for €596,883, leaving Sam Trickett still without a bracelet on his resume despite a lot of near misses.

Player of the Year latest

The race has really gone down to the wire and it looks like the €25,500 Mixed Games Championships could be the decider. Robert Campbell regained his lead in the race but third place Daniel Negreanu has made the final table of this event (along with Phil Hellmuth, Julien Martini, Alex Livingston, Benny Glaser and Dzmitry Urbanovich). 

A 4th place finish in that event for KidPoker today would be enough for him to take the narrowest of leads in the race, while a win would make him a huge favourite.

Chad questions the prestige of the WSOPE

Last week Veteran WSOP commentator Norman Chad (who is not at the WSOPE) took time out to question the prestige of the series, specifically around the fact that all the events are re-entry:

All 15 events are re-entry, and 11 of them are unlimited re-entry.

WSOP Europe:
Every single event is re-entry and most of them are UNLIMITED re-entry.
These are WSOP bracelet events.
This is not poker.
This is open up your wallet and try to build a big stack, and if you bust, open up your wallet and do it again. And again. And again.

I mean, you folks can spend weeks arguing about BB Ante & weeks on markup shaming, but where are all the high-minded poker bigwigs leaning out the window & shouting, “I’m mad as hell & I’m not going to take it anymore” when it comes to UNLIMITED re-entry at WSOP bracelet events?

Tournament poker is becoming a joke – re-buys, re-entries, unlimited re-entries, late late registration, quantum this & quantum that.

The re-entry debate is a long and well trodden battleground in poker. Despite how ubiquitous they are in the industry, re-entries are quite rare in bracelet events. When somebody who has played a big part in the history of the WSOP comes out against them in bracelet events, it does give you pause for thought. 

Two more double bracelet winners

The World Series of Poker Europe has ensured at least two more players can say they won two bracelets in a single year. 

Dash Dudley won the opening €550 PLO event for €51,600, which was impressive but doesn't make much of a dent compared to his $1,086,967 PLO Championship win from the Summer. 

Elsewhere, Asi Moshe took down the €1,650 PLO/No Limit Mix event for €97,465 to go alongside his $1,500 bracelet from the WSOP, which he won for $253,933. It is also his 2nd WSOPE bracelet in as many years and fourth bracelet overall.
