In celebration of the announcement of the PokerStrategy.com Heads-up Championship, Barry Carter takes a look back at some of the most infamous heads-up battles in poker history.
10. Erik123 vs Liz Lieu

Liz Lieu
This week we have already warned of the dangers of calling another player a fish, and one player who knows exactly how costly it is is Erik "Erik123" Sagstrom.
The legendary online player called Liz Lieu a fish in an online game, which set up this heads-up poker battle.
The two duked it out in a best-of-three heads-up series with $600,000 on the line. Dubbed "Beauty vs the Beast", the two played three matches at the Bellagio in May of 2006.
Lieu eventually beat Sagstrom 2-1 in the limit hold'em battle.
9. Annette vs Doyle

A similar best-of-three heads-up battle took place in 2008 between online Phenom Annette Obrestad and old school legend Doyle Brunson.
It was a much more good natured affair at the 2008 WSOPE in this press-friendly clash of the poker generations.
This truly was the epitome of the old school generation vs the online generation. You had the 19-year-old, female, Norwegian online star vs the 75-year-old, male, Stetson-wearing Texas road gambler. Proving the old school were by no means old news, Doyle bested Obrestad 2-0.
8. durrrr vs Hellmuth
Another classic encounter of old school and new school now, as Tom "durrrr" Dwan and Phil Hellmuth are introduced to each other for the first time at the NBC Heads-up Championships.
The match itself was very short, but the aftermath was hilarious:

7. The Superstar Showdowns

Viktor Blom
Certainly the most fearless and exciting online player to watch heads-up in recent years has been Viktor "Isildur1" Blom. PokerStars clearly saw the appeal in his heads-up game and set up a regular series of heads-up cash game challenges for the Swedish star.
The SuperStar Showdown series saw Blom take on a series of elite players including Isaac Haxton, Tony G, Daniel Negreanu, Daniel '
junglemandan' Cates and Eugene Katchalov.
Blom ended up winning 11 out of the 14 challenges in total, only losing to Isaac Haxton (twice) and once to Daniel Negreanu. He ended the challenge up by $1,196,746 after 37,788 hands in total.
6. Johnny Moss vs Nick "The Greek"

Johnny Moss
The event that first put the heads-up grudge match into poker folklore has to be Nick "The Greek" Dandolos vs Johnny Moss.
Said to have took place around 1949 at Binion's Casino in Las Vegas, it was possibly the longest and biggest heads-up match ever to take place.
The match started in January and the two played virtually every day until May. Moss is said to have taken between two and three million dollars from Dandalos, which would be worth about $25 million today.
Eventually Dandalos conceded defeat, and uttered the famous words "Mr Moss, I have to let you go."
