The new tennis season gets properly underway on Monday as the year’s first major, The Australian Open, begins. But who will win?
Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena plays host to Tennis’ first major tournament of 2018 as this year’s Australian Open gets going on Monday, but will we see a new winner crowned this year?
Seasoned winners Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal dominated the Grand Slams in 2017 and, without Andy Murray who has already withdrawn due to a hip problem, it would take a brave man to bet against one of these two cleaning up once again.
That said, former world number one Novak Djokovic is the second favourite, splitting the two in some sportsbooks, and with many majors banked himself, he looks like a sound bet too.
Grigor Dimitrov is next in the betting but expect a late run of money to pour onto Alexander Zverev, widely tipped to be the game’s next big star. The big hitting young German posted a superb season in 2017, winning his first two Masters titles and climbing to number four in the world rankings. Could he claim his first career major in Melbourne?
Women’s Champion?
For the ladies, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza leads the betting but cautious bettors be advised, particpation is entirely dependent on how quickly the injury hampered star overcomes her latest fitness issue.
With reigning champion and new mum, Serena Williams giving this year’s tournament a miss, Karolina Pilskova is considered the second favourite, while Simona Halep lies next in the betting.
Williams’ opponent in last year’s final was her very own sister Venus who is scheduled to make an appearance at this year’s championships and is rated as a 25/1 shot at Ladbrokes to win another a major, but more likely victors could be either Maria Sharapova or Caroline Wozniacki as indicated by their shorter prices.
