GGPoker: How will Ocean Rewards benefit you
GGPoker replaces Fish Buffet with Ocean Rewards, offering fixed yearly tiers and up to 80% online poker rakeback. PokerStrategy.com breaks down how to get the most value from the new system.
At the end of last year, GGPoker announced a fundamental shift in its rakeback model, replacing the long-running Fish Buffet with the new Ocean Rewards system. At the time, speculation quickly followed: could this become an industry-leading rakeback and rewards program?
As of January 30, Ocean Rewards is officially live—and it is time to take a closer look. A detailed breakdown reveals what has changed, how the new mechanics work, and where different types of PokerStrategists can extract the most value under the updated structure.
For those not yet active on GGPoker, registration via PokerStrategy.com provides direct access to the world’s largest online poker ecosystem—an established entry point for building a long-term career on the virtual felt.
Brandnew Ocean Rewards on GGPoker
When GGPoker transitions players into the new system, no value is lost in the process. Any remaining Fish Buffet or Platinum rewards are credited automatically within 30 minutes after login, with a confirmation message sent directly to the player account.

Tier placement under Ocean Rewards also happens automatically. Players are assigned their new status based on their current Fish Buffet rank or accumulated Fish Points, ensuring a smooth rollover without manual steps or resets. Existing loyalty statuses are converted directly into the corresponding ocean-themed tiers:
- GG Platinum → Whale
- Platinum Shark → Dolphin
- All lower Fish Buffet ranks → Matching Ocean tiers, scaling down to Fish

The transition preserves player standing while aligning everyone with the new reward ecosystem from day one.
Tide Points & Gems
The Ocean Rewards on GGPoker, the system is built around two core currencies that serve different purposes:
Tide Points
Tide Points replace the old Fish Points as the core progression metric. They are earned through regular play, track rake contribution, and determine both tier advancement and overall status. The structure is level-based and entirely driven by Tide Points accumulation. For every $1 in rake paid, players receive 100 Tide Points (TP), creating a clear and predictable progression path through the Ocean Rewards tiers.
On GGPoker, Tide Points are primarily earned based on the rake or fees generated while playing poker games. However, the final allocation is not purely mechanical. The system also takes a broader view to promote a balanced and sustainable poker ecosystem.
In addition to raw rake contribution, factors such as play history and game selection, opponent diversity, deposit and withdrawal behavior, and participation in platform features and promotions can all influence how many Tide Points are ultimately awarded. This means Tide Point earnings may vary between players even with similar volume, depending on overall activity patterns.
Gems
Under Ocean Rewards on GGPoker, every dollar paid in rake or fees generates 100 Tide Points (TP) and 100 Gems. Tide Points drive tier progression, while Gems operate independently as a redeem-anytime rewards currency, giving players full control over when benefits are claimed.

Progression is further incentivized through rank-up bonuses. This creates a clear two-lane system: TP moves status upward, Gems unlock rewards along the way.
Gems are designed to complement, not replace, Tide Points. They scale with both earned TP and Ocean tier, do not influence level advancement, and exist solely to access additional rewards inside the client. Crucially, Gems are not direct cashback—they add a flexible bonus layer on top of standard rakeback, expanding the overall loyalty value rather than substituting it.

Assumptions Used for the Calculations
These projections are based on a simplified model and rely on the following assumptions:
- The player starts at the top Ocean Rewards tier, carried over from last year’s VIP status
- All Gems are redeemed at year-end; holding Gems longer could improve conversion value
- PVI effects are excluded. They will have an impact - your deposit history, your game selection and playing style contributes. However there is no formula - for more, see below.
- Redemptions do not always use the single best-value package, since mixing rewards can be more practical
- Any remaining Gems are valued at $0.001 per Gem, equivalent to redeeming them via the $5 reward pack

PVI Rake and the Ocean Rewards
At this stage, GGPoker has not officially confirmed whether the Player Value Index (PVI) will carry over into Ocean Rewards. If it does remain in place, it is expected to function as before.
PVI affects how many Tide Points are actually awarded for rake paid. While the headline rate is 100 TP per $1 of rake, the effective return can be lower depending on individual player metrics. These include overall volume and consistency, playing style, deposit and withdrawal behavior, and the broader player profile.
In practice, this means not every player receives the full theoretical rate. For some accounts, the conversion may be closer to 65 or even 40 Tide Points per $1 Rake. As in the previous system, profitable players and high-volume grinders typically earn fewer points per dollar than recreational players.
