What is our satellite reshove range against the leader?

Dara O'Kearney returns with another ICM quiz and this time it is all about the best hands to 3-bet all-in with on the bubble.

Today we have another satellite ICM quiz. This time we are on the bubble of a satellite with six players remaining. The chip leader min raises with 23 big blinds behind, you are next to act with 20 big blinds.

If everyone is playing GTO, which of these hands do you prefer to reshove with?

  • 66
  • KK
  • JTs

Before you decide, most of my Twitter audience said KK:

The weirdest range ever?

The actual answer is any Ace, and nothing else.

I knew that Ax is your best reshove here before I started the quiz, but even I was surprised at the shape at this ICMIZER 3 range. It really looks weird, but when you think about it, it makes perfect sense:

These are all the hands and how profitable each is

If everyone is playing GTO, then the only hand the Villain can call with is Pocket Aces, therefore it is much more important for us to have the Ace blocker than it is to have a big hand that wins a lot at showdown like Pocket Kings. This proves a mantra I have for satellites, that fold equity is the most important form of equity in satellites.

Blockers should play the biggest role in deciding the hands you need to get people to fold. We cover this in detail in Poker Satellite Strategy

In a real life soft game where your opponent might call wider, I would probably also include hands like KK in there. Perhaps more than anything this highlights why the Villain would have been better off open shoving rather than min raising in this spot, because we would have to fold everything if they had.

What did you pick? Let us know in the comments:
