WSOP Event #27: New Final Table, Same Old Faces
With 59 remaining players, the contestants were in for a long day two of the $5,000 PL Omaha-8 Event. In the end, the final table has been set - with a lot of known faces to return for the final day.
The new Pot Limit Omaha Hi-Lo Split seems to be going rather well if you take a look at the amount of notable players who signed up to this tournament which made its first appearance this year. In 12 hours, the 59 remaining players played down to the final nine.
It was obvious that it would be a hard-fought battle, with participants like Daniel Negreanu, Alex Kravchenko, Mike Matusow, Eli Elezra and Andy Bloch left in the field.
Michael Binger was amongst the first to take his leave on this day. His chips all went in on the 
flop, where he seemed to be looking rather good with his 
for top pair and quite a few outs to the straight. He was however far behind Kirill Rabatov who flipped over 
for top set and flush draw and was eliminated after a meaningless 
on turn and river.
All the while, Phil Ivey was blinding down most of the day as he was still busy winning his next bracelet in the Mixed Omaha-8/Stud-8 Event. During the break in that event, he did however show up to take down a quick double up before sitting out again - much to the distaste of Kirill Rabtsov, who was Ivey's victim in the hand.
Jason Mercier (pictured left) was one of the next players to be knocked out of the tournament. Roland De Wolf called his all-in on the 
board and was good with his 
. Mercier wasn't able to catch a saving card on the 
turn or 
river and took off to play Event #29, the $10,000 Heads-Up Championship - where he passed through the first round with an impressive performance.
Daniel Negreanu wasn't happy to see Phil Ivey come back for another short visit, as the latter knocked him down to a mere 13,000 in chips, while he got himself back up to a comfortable 53,000.
In a subsequent pot, they clinched heads again as they chopped up a pot - with Martin Corpuz being the chip donor in the hand. Phil Ivey managed to make it back into the race with about 100,000 in chips, while Negreanu managed to stay alive and double to 27,000.
It didn't last long, however, as Daniel Negreanu (pictured right) was eliminated by Anthony Lellouche's 
. Negreanu looked in good shape with his 
, but as the board ran out 
, it completed Lellouche's Broadway and sent Negreanu to the rails. Including another subsequent elimination, Lellouche now was the dominant chip leader with an astounding 357,000 in chips.
Phil Ivey however almost managed to make it to the final two tables by just playing during the breaks of the other tournament - almost. He finally busted in a three-way pot against Stewart Yancik and Senovio Ramirez III. Yancik flopped the straight and scooped the main pot, while Ramirez took down the side pot, leaving Ivey with no chips in this event.
In the end, most of the players to make it past the day were too calm to be noticed next to the spotlight currently shining on the seemingly unstoppable Phil Ivey. Nevertheless, the final table is filled with known names of the poker world and we can expect an action-packed final table tomorrow.
