Main Event bubble bursts
It's getting serious now as there are now only 378 players left in this year's main event. The remaining players are guaranteed $30,974 however they'll all have their eyes on the $8,711,956 top prize which is getting closer and closer. Some big names remain, including Daniel Negreanu, Ben Lamb, Sebastian Ruthenberg and Allen Cunningham. The hand that rocked the railbirds
Two time EPT runner-up and PokerStrategy.com member Max Heinzelmann AKA hotkarlmc managed to create quite a stir on Friday in one of the most memorable hands of the Main Event so far. Max was sat at the feature table with well-known American pro Shaun Deeb. The two players have a lot of history together online and this resulted in Max 6-bet shoving A6 into Deeb's AA. After the dealer rolled out a 6 on the flop followed by a 6 on the river, the American railbirds went nuts in disbelief at their hero's bad luck. The critics on the forums all have an opinion on the hand; some call HotkarlMC a donk, some say he is a genius. Fortunately for Max, his high variance plays are working well as he sits very near the top of the chip counts overnight.
Bodog spill beans about new venture
Commonly known for their US sportsbook and poker room, Bodog announced plans for a new side to their business yesterday. Bodog pride themselves on being an aspirational lifestyle brand and have shown their intentions by announcing a brand licensing deal to set up a new integrated food and beverage business. Bodogcoffee.com outlets will be springing up in the near future in the Filipino capital Manila and will be looking to rapidly expand into Asia. Bodog founder Calvin Ayre spoke excitedly of the deal, claiming 'this is a perfect fit to highlight what the Bodog brand personifies'.
Table rule confuses WSOP players
Players have been voicing their concerns over the WSOP 'talk about your hand in a heads up pot' ruling. Harrah's and the WSOP have enforced a rule which states that "players may not a.) Disclose contents of live or folded hands, b.) Advise or criticize play before the action is completed, or c.) Read a hand that hasn't been tabled". Daniel Negreanu has been calling for reform on this rule, claiming that it is ruining poker as a spectacle, and his good friend Erick Lindgren agrees, saying "Daniel could not be any more correct that players should be able to say anything in a heads-up pot. Worst rule in a game with many bad ones". Jamie Gold famously talked his way to the top in the 2006 WSOP, and the rule has been implemented to protect the integrity of every player in a tournament. It'll be interesting to see if the rule remains in place for next year's WSOP.
