Elky's book

Poker superstar Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier is no stranger to studying hard in order to succeed. He is the most decorated player in France's poker history, and has earned more than any other Frenchman in tournaments (he leads David Benyamine by $2.5 million).

A lot of ElkY's success is attributed to his willingness to learn, along with an unfaltering determination which saw him playing StarCraft professionally prior to him taking up poker.

Whichever way you look at it, Grospellier is a tournament beast, and fans will be delighted to hear that his latest book has just been released, co written with Lee Nelson. "The Raiser's Edge" unlocks ElkY’s analytical thought processes on modern tournament poker and attempts to equip players with the tools they need to beat the fast paced contemporary game.

Subtitled "Tournament-Poker Strategies for Today's Aggressive Game", the book explores various facets of advanced MTT play, including how to play LAG, the art of the squeeze, 3-betting and value betting.

APPT update

Day 3 of the APPT Queenstown concluded a few hours ago and just 21 remain from the 71 players who started the day’s play.

The good news is that our man chenny8888 is still in the hunt, sitting 8th in chips with 121,200. Marcel Schreiner leads the way with an impressive 453,800 and popular Aussie pro Jonathan "xMONSTERxDONGx" Karamalikis follows him closely, sitting in third place with 192,800 chips.

Play is set to start a little later on day 4 and we’ll be following chenny8888 closely!

Twitter is a wonderful thing. We can find follow friends, enemies, celebrities, hell we can even follow poker players.

Interesting news coming from the poker twittersphere today is that Dan Bilzerian has allegedly just had his "third heart attack" although has checked out of hospital despite the doctor's fears that he may die. Bilzerian quips, "I've been gambling all week. I bet I'll live".

Tony G's tweets are as vocal as ever, and today he expresses his concern over Full Tilt's inability to focus on "specific problems they need to address in order to get back up and running". Mr G is seemingly calling time on FTP, saying "It's now almost inevitable that they are beyond salvation, as they really are not focusing on the right areas to facilitate a recovery".

Meanwhile, Phil Hellmuth is harping on about the pink hat he’ll be wearing thanks to losing a prop bet with Tom Dwan - "Time to pay up!!" he exclaims.

High stakes corner

The last 24 hours at the high stakes tables have been as relentless as ever, with Viktor Blom showing his true mettle and bouncing back from Thursday’s slaying by Ilari Sahamies.

The man known as "Isildur1" had a great comeback, notching up a $366,661 win according to HSDB, with Ronny "1-ronnyr3" Kaiser being the day’s biggest loser, dropping $253,062.

Ilari “Ilari FIN” Sahamies continued his supreme August with a $139k win, putting him up an incredible $1.571.878 for the month.

WPT Legends of Poker

The WPT rolled into town in California yesterday where the Legends of Poker Main Event kicked off at the Bicycle Casino. The event is likely to attract a big prizepool seeing as this year’s buy-in has been lowered as well as allowing players to re-enter on day 1b if they are knocked out on day 1a.

It's the first televised WPT of the year, and numbers were up yesterday with 148 of the 322 day 1a players making it through. Sitting at the top of the counts is Matthew Berkey with 248,500 chips. He’s closely followed by a strong field including Soi Nguyen (215,200), Will Failla (148,300) and Hafiz Khan (130,100). Also in the pack is today’s hot shot…
