Last year, the PokerStars EPT Barcelona set the record for the largest tournament ever to be held in Spain. It attracted an impressive 750 players. This year that record has already been reset as 811 total players paid the €5,300 entry fee to take a shot at life-changing money.
This year's lucky first place winner will receive €850,000 of the massive €4,055,000 total prize pool, as well as the pride and notoriety that comes with taking down an EPT title.
Guillaurme Darcourt of France finished Day 1B with the chip lead. Darcourt will start Day 2 with 195,300 chips and the chip lead again, as he accumulated more than Day 1A leader Martin Schleich.
PokerStars pro Eugene Katchalov had an excellent day and finished 6th overall of the Day 1B finishers (153,100 chips). The highlight of his day was getting away with a huge bluff vs. Timothy Marsters where Marsters mucked pocket kings face up on a dry board, and Katchalov showed his own pocket fives. Neither man had a set or draw.
Daniel 'Jungleman12' Cates is primarily known as an online cash player but today showed his prowess at the live tables as well. Cates will head into Day 2 with 140,500 chips.
German pro Marvin Rettenmaier continued his 2011 run good and despite finishing the day with a lot of chips (114,200) could have finished even higher as he lost his only major coinflip of the day.
Some noteworthy players who made an exit on Day 1B include Chris Moneymaker, ElkY, Dario Minieri, Liv Boeree, Daniel Negreanu, Viktor 'Isildur1' Blom, and Johannes Strassmann.
