UKIPT Nottingham Breaks £1 Million

They promised a prizepool of £1 million and in true UKIPT style that guarantee was broken yesterday when a total of 536 players made their way to Nottingham for day 1C of the event.

Yesterday’s haul took the overall number of entrants to 1,625, meaning that when everyone’s £700 had been added to the pot a grand total of £1,137,500 had been raised.

The record figure means that when the remaining 351 players come back today they will be shooting for a top prize of £210,400. The payouts will begin once the 208th player has hit the rail.

Amongst the top stacks vying for the top prize will be Chris Brammer, Gareth Teatum and Richard Young. Also still in the hunt are PokerStars’ pros Jude Ainsworth and Liv Boeree as well as WPT Editor Jon Young.

Today’s session will play into the money before the race for the final table begins tomorrow.
 

Time at the Big Game

For some it was the game they never wanted to end, for others it was a marathon session they never want to repeat.

This year’s Party Poker Big Game has produced some enthralling poker with big wins, crushing losses and even the odd misclick or two.

The games biggest winner, both in terms of profit and endurance, was Phil Laak. The amped up American managed to rack up €160,000 in profit; a figure just short of Tony G’s all-time record.

Also bagging a decent profit before leaving to catch a flight was Andrew Moseley. The British pro, who has been crushing the high stakes lives games for the past few years, left the game with €100,000 in his back pocket.

A large chunk of that came courtesy of Sam Trickett whose queen high flush wasn’t enough against Moseley’s king flush in a pot worth €63,000.

At the other end of the spectrum, the game’s biggest loser was Dan junglemandan Cates who dropped €86,000 before calling time on his session.

It wasn’t all about the on-table frolics, though, as there were backstage antics aplenty at this year’s event which is sure to make exciting TV when it hits the airwaves later this year.

Never Fold

Tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of poker’s darkest day: Black Friday. The DOJ's shutdown of the world’s 3 largest poker sites caused widespread panic across the industry and changed poker's landscape forever.

While the European and international markets soon reopened, the American community were left out in the cold. Indeed, with political debates still ongoing, the online industry has still not been allowed back into the US.

To mark the occasion and to continue the fight for regulation of online poker in the US, the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) is launching a “Never Fold” campaign. Their website now boasts the slogan: “Never fold in the fight for America’s greatest card game.”

The rallying call to action is accompanied by a specially designed logo which can be downloaded by anyone and displayed at any and every opportunity.

While US regulation doesn’t look to be on the immediate horizon, there is now much more optimism in the community than there was 12 months ago. Indeed, for many it’s now a case of when not if, and looking back to last April that’s undoubtedly a vast improvement.
