Attendance record smashed again in the Seniors event
Record breaking turn out forces play into an extra day and generates $4,850,100 prize pool for a senior's game won by Frank Maggio.
56-year-old Frank Maggio won his first WSOP bracelet along with his third-ever series cash after winning the $1,000 Seniors No Limit Hold'em Championship last Sunday.
The event is restricted to players 50 years of age or older and was this year notable for boasting the biggest ever field for a senior’s event, some 5,389 entries, up over 19% on the previous highest turnout and proof, were it needed, that there is plenty of love for the game remaining among veteran players.
The massive field contributed to the $4,850,100 prize pool and also forced the event into a fourth day, as opposed to the original three it had been allotted.
Maggio landed $617,303 after four and a half hours of final table play, including just eight hands of heads-up play against William Murray, in which he emerged victorious to add to his $40,000 in prior tournament cashes and finally claim the bracelet he has been looking for since turning fifty.
"I've been coming out here every year since I turned fifty, to play the Senior's event and some other stuff. I cashed a couple years ago and this year's a big surprise."

Also running at The Rio right now is the $1,000 Super Seniors No-Limit Hold'em in which Kerry Goldberg is in front after the close of play on Day Two with 22 players remaining from the 1720 that entered.
