Hossein Ensan wins the 2019 WSOP Main Event

The German EPT winner is now your World Champion and $10 million richer after taking down the big one in Las Vegas.

German Hossein Ensan went into the World Series of Poker Main Event final table as the favourite, both because of his superb poker resume and also because of a huge chip lead. 

That seemed like it was enough to secure him the title as in the early hours of Wednesday morning he became the 2019 World Series of Poker Main Event champion. 

The EPT Prague champion defeated Dario Sammartino of Italy heads-up to take down the $10 million first prize after his pocket Kings held against a combo draw of Sammartino. 

He becomes the 2nd German champion of the World Series of Poker Main Event, following in the footsteps of Pius Heinz. He is also the third Iranian born Main Event winner, along with Monsour Matloubi and Hamid Dastmalchi.

"This is the best feeling in my life," the 55-year-old said after the win. "Unbelievable! I am so happy I’m here with the bracelet in hand. What can I say?"

This was a landmark World Series of Poker Main Event for many reasons, most notably because with 8,659 runners it was the 2nd biggest ever, some 13 years after the 2006 Main Event won by Jamie Gold. It also boasted the joint 2nd biggest first prize of $10 million, again just behind the $12 million won by Jamie Gold. Day 1C was the biggest single day in Main Event history with 4,877 players. 

Time will tell whether it is because poker is on the up, the addition of late registration on Day 2, an uptick in the economy and crypto, or something else entirely. Next up for the World Series of Poker is the World Series of Poker Europe in Rozvadov from September 28. Right now Robert Campbell holds the lead in the Player of the Year race but Shaun Deeb, Daniel Negreanu and Daniel Zack are right behind him.
