Poker questions everyone should ask themselves

Stealing a blog idea from finance writer Morgan Housel, Barry Carter suggests some questions we should all ask ourselves now and then...

Who has tagged you as a fish?

How much better did I run when I started playing poker than others who started, and gave up, around the same time?

What strategies do I employ at the tables because I saw other people do them, rather than because I know why they work?

Which players do I think played badly, only because I didn’t like losing to them?

Which professional poker players do I admire, who are financially worse off than I am?

Which professional poker players do I admire, but are actually losing players on the right side of variance?

Which players do I assume are terrible, but they are simply running poorly?

Which players at my table have tagged me as a fish?

Ask yourself what if?

What if your biggest result or near miss went the other way?

Which players do I consider fishy, but I simply cannot understand their advanced strategies?

What strategy concepts do I claim to understand, yet would struggle to explain if asked about?

How many of my downswings were actually caused by bad play, not variance?

Which hands did I play perfectly fine, but I assumed I messed up because I lost?

What games do I overestimate my ability in?

Questions we can't answer, but should still ask

What are you too scared to study?

When did I change a winning strategy because I was being results-oriented?

What strategies am I scared to employ at the tables because I don’t want to look stupid?

How would my life be different if my biggest result had never happened?

How would my life be different if my biggest near miss came in instead?

What areas of my game do I shy away from studying, because I can’t admit my leaks in them?

How many times was I on the brink of quitting, were it not for a lucky river card?
