Could someone please explain to me why, in the year 2011, there are still people using the word "faggot" as an insult? Isn't that kind of 1950s?

Yes, "faggot" sounds so 1990. In todays modern world it's "fag".

Anyways. One of my friends who happens to be gay once told me that he's going to be roommates with some dude. So I was curious what's going on and if that dude was gay too.

My friend replied: "No he's not gay, he's a fag." I asked him about the difference and he said: "He's homosexual but he doesn't know anything about art nor literature, therefore he's not gay, he's a fag."

P.S. Did you know that the word "idiot" originally meant a person who is neutral or hasn't chosen a side? Thats how words and their meaning change as the time goes by.

A 'fag' in English terms used to be a 1st year-come- new boy- junior type in private schools. A sort of whipping boy come go-for if you like.

I thought in England "fag" meant cigarette.
