You probably meant 55 and J5 instead of 88 J8.. since 5 was on flop and not 8.

Anyway, I would raise flop to protect against flushdraws. Then bet/fold turn, and check or bet river depending if flush hits.

Since he is an unknown I would just raise/broke the flop here to get value from weaker draws and JX, since if we make a pot sized raise for value/protection we are committed anyway.

If he was a nit then maybe I prefer your line. It's hard to tell whether this is JX looking for protection or to b/f or a draw trying to semibluff. Of course maybe he has JJ/55/44 here but then we can always make a note to say that he might DB to induce.

Well, actually I don't mind your call on flop that much. Although I'd most likely just raise it right on turn to protect from any kind of draw. It's more likely that he doesn't have a very strong hand here while the 4 made just unlikely him to have a hand. A lot of Jx hands are in his range and maybe even draws.
