(NL2) 6-max or 9-max?

The biggest diffs are:
1) you need to loosen up. A vpip around 15 might be oke 9max. In 6max 20-24 is normal. An UTG-open is less strong. A 3bet after an early-open is less strong.
2) the blinds come around more often. You need to steal blinds more, and you need to protect your blinds more.
3) 6max is faster. (--> less tables).
4) 6max is less fishy (in my experience)

I got the feeling that in 6-max there is more high risk/high reward situations. More light 3-bets, even all-in plays with medium hands.

It is possible that I played on bad tables, as my sample is not so big. But I feel that a player with a skill edge can profit more on 6-max than on 9-max, where people tend to play more tightly

6max is equal to 9max when the first 3 players have folded.

I have played both 6-max and full-ring cash game.

6-Max is much more aggressive and if you have tilt issues this format will cause you to spew like a 'tard if you are not careful. i.e. the constant battle against BB stealers. Before you know it, due to frustration, you 4/bet jam into AA/KK/QQ with less than premium hand because you have had enough of the bb stealing.

The players are these tables tend to be better than those at full-ring. The variance is greater, rake per 100/bb is bigger, and the winrates are smaller at 6-max for average players.

I prefer full-ring overall. I was successful at 6-max albeit at the fish stakes but full-ring is less hectic of a playing experience and the winrate, for me, is higher at full-ring.

Good points, Arthur. While looking at win rate we also should factor that 6-max plays way more hands/hr than 9-max, so even having lesser bb/100, it makes up in volume.

I'll try to mix up both a little bit, I get a feeling that transitioning to 6-max can be useful on the long run. As stakes go higher, tables tend to be short handed

IMO even if you plan to keep on the 9 max, switching to 6 max will improve a lot your postflop game and when you go back to 9max you'll prolly have some more edge on the field.

Sorry man, I have to disagree. 6max is wayyyyy fishier than 9max. There are so many people just splashing their money around. Just play super tight and bet your strong hands extremely hard 4 value. It's more, swinging, yes, but who cares? Your winrate will be over 10bb/100 on NL2 in the long run (okay, normally there won't be a "long run" because you'll move up to NL 5 very quickly ...
