Was it right to call?

Bet less on the flop. Fold to the shove i think. If you have no reads you have no reason to disbelieve him and call with ace high.

Alternatively you might want to just avoid the c-bet and take a free card. A lot of the time you WILL get shoved here by bad players. His reasoning is as follows: I have top pair, he doesnt have a pocket pair (though he has no way of knowing this) ergo I shove. You dont want to be involved in situations like this.

#2. plus often our ace outs are not live, so we can't make the call on odds either

I cant see what UTG had but my guess is pocket pair probably from 22 - 1010.
On flop I think a bet is right, probably around 350 to see where you are. UTG check raise all in, he either has overpair, trips or is total bluff. Either way I dont see how you can call as you are only beating a bluff and maybe not even that if he has AK.
