Bet/folding is fine against a reg because if you had 9876 you would also be bet/folding here. If you check/call the flop against a reg you're pretty much telling him you have a vulnerable made hand like AK/AT as you would bet QJ and AA most likely and check/fold anything that isn't 2 pair.
Check/calling is okay against someone you have no history on as they will probably bluff this flop. You could even call the turn as well depending on bet sizing. Most people with the nuts will jam the turn when a flush draw shows up so you can fold to a big turn bet.
