Hand converted with online PokerStrategy.com hand converter:

Play hand

$0.1/$0.25 No-Limit Hold'em (6 handed)

Known players:
[tg]CO$30.79:///////;BU$36.87:///////;SB$18.36:///////;BB$33.38:///////;MP2 (Hero)$27.06:///////;MP3$25.00:///////;[/tg]

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with K:c, A:s.
Hero raises to $0.87, 2 folds, BU raises to $2.40, SB calls $2.30, BB folds, Hero calls $1.53.

Flop: ($7.45) 3:d, 8:d, 5:c (3 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, BU bets $4.10, SB folds, Hero raises to $9.25, BU folds, Hero gets uncalled bet back.

Final Pot: $11.55.

THOUGHTS:

BU is a reg which I pretty much respect and I know he respects my play as well. We locked horns before but with decent hands and never really made crazy plays against each other.
SB is a one-tabler with only about 75BB and I have no read him yet, so when he just flat the BU 3bet I was a bit cautious.

1. I don't like 4betting here bec the overcaller likely have a hand that he would stack off preflop with 75 BB es. By experience, a recreational player will mostly do this with mid to premium pairs to slowplay. And I hate flipping with AK against a rec player with a pair because I have a bigger edge postflop.
2. 4bet shoving is worse because BU may wake up with a monster too. So that leaves me with a not so optimal OOP call multiway with AKo.
3. I check to evaluate their actions. BU cbet, then SB folds. Now I am up against the reg who knows how to fold if he didn't have it.
4. I thought that on a low flop like that, BU 3bet range does not hit monsters too often and when I flat his preflop 3bet, my range is more "mid-pair heavy" than his. So I decided to 3bet his flop cbet to represent mid pair because I thought he could not continue with overcards knowing that I would likely shove turn. END

if you think he had overcards, you got the nutz of overcards and therefore it's not a bluff anymore

In a sense yes you are right, however, my intention when I 3bet is not to bet for value and hope to get called by worse overcards, I wan't him to fold.... therefor I am bluffing. (and yeah he could still have a small pair :P)

again IMO you are protecting, not bluffing... And a down side that I see is that you give a good opportunity to an Adxd to shove on you which would be hard to to call and that you clearly dominate. a hand like AdQd could probably call:

for $5 in to $20 , 4:1 odds , 20% pot odds, only FD is 19%, and they often have 1 clean out and implied odds. So I am not too sure about your bet size here.

Good point sir and thank you for your replies. Sorry but I only know value and bluff bets... if I am protecting as a result of my bets then let it be...

Honestly I really don't see any viable move here than to 3bet if I want to take down the pot. I cant really shove since villain may really have a monster too. I 3bet 2.2x and I don't see anything wrong with that. Yes he can shove with Adxd here but thats the point of my 3bet, I want to know if he has a hand that he is willing to stack off without risking my whole stack.

The reason for my 3bet is to leave an impression to villain that I am committing almost half of my chips there with mid-pair. If I am wrong, I save half my stack, If he is wrong and I have the best hand, I stack him off. Probably a naive way of thinking but that's the way I thought about this spot. He needs FD or mid pair to continue otherwise he'll fold I believe. I don't know if he will call with AQ but I have no problem with that, I'll take note and move on.
