A Russian Missile Defence System False Alarm

Global nuclear war was averted by the (in)action of one man

On this day in 1983, a missile defence technician in the then USSR didn't trust his instrumentation (or his superiors apparently) and failed to sound the alarm when his system reported missile launches by the USA

More bout the incident
More about the man

Growing up in Canada in the 1960s we were very aware as early as six years old that the world was under the threat of nuclear war. Few of us really believed we would live to see 30. But we did.

Thanks Stanislav!

Don't know. There are still enough wars around on earth. You would be depressed if you know exactly what happends on earth.

Depends on which people I suppose.
Personally, I prefer no nuclear war.
Prefer no war of any kind of course
