For each pot -- and side pot -- the equity of the hands is compared.
A tool such as Equilab can be used to compare the hands.
Equilab is a free download using that link.
It calculates the equity in one of two ways:
Enumerate -- all possible boards are compared to arrive at the equity. This is possible only for narrow ranges. For wide ranges, it just takes too long.
Monte Carlo -- it runs the hands repeatedly for several million boards.
Tools like PokerTracker and Hold'em Manager likely do something similar
