Burnt out grinder with(out) teeth

Decided to own this day mostly for poker and for muscle exercise.

Mourning sessions were pretty decent, got only +1bin on +500 hands, but it's ok as my game was rather solid. I was proud about 2 hands there:

1. Villain has stats that indicated he 3-bets light but fold to 4b often. In this case a cold 4bet from my position would just scream strength, so decided to call anyway. On the turn I ch/raised to represent some random spazz-out. The hand played itself after all ♦

2. In this hand I flopped well and fish decides to donk weak. His range consists of draws and small pairs that ain't folding, but decided to build up a pot in case I hit. Turn he donks again, no value in raising. River is nice card and when he donks so small I knew his range is rather weak, so easy value-raise. Didn't want to raise over dollar as it would most likely drive him away.

One hand was interesting where villain just played very tight but overly aggressive. He had cbet stats 7/7, raise cbet 4/4. Good spot to turn AK into a bluff.

Hi guys,

I got myself HM2 for 5 days ago, and I decided to put up a graph here for results with it so far. I have only NLHE here, but does it matter ♦?

So far so good.. Overall BB/100 a bit over 7.26, With EV it would be a bit better. But can't complain, I'm playing my best tennis for a while and games are ratter smooth.

Did you guys know how important pre-flop ranges are all-in-all for the overall game?

One would think that you can call every crap they call in TV shows, others think that they are always having the same calling range. But it shouldn't be that way. Especially flatting pre is a problem and you rarely hit a thing nor accomplish something with flatting.

When to flat?

When and what should you flat pre-flop? You shouldn't have some stone-cold flat range actually, but you should differ it by your opponent. Here's few factors that should help you to determine flatting/folding/3-betting pre in position:

Villain's post-flop tendencies

Is he weak and plays one and done? I'd take some semi-strong BW's here against looser and weaker guys, also some speculative hands that can take the pot down with floats. If villain barrels a lot, I'd flat more of those speculative hands and play aggressive post-flop with some draws (in case his not maniac that spazzes out against raises).

Your skill edge to villain

If you have other skill edges than the ones mentioned before, you could call pre-flop in position, even with hands like A♣4 . That requires you to know your opponent better, though.

Villain folds to 3-bet a lot

This applies to some villains that are likely to fold to 3-bet (like over 60% at least). Then you might want to flat hands like JJ/QQ/TT and never 3-bet them. Of course, again villain's post-flop tendencies are something that helps us to determine whether to flat or not. If villain is tight pre but spazzes out post-flop, I'd call these hands but 3-bet pre with blocker hands or hands that might not flop that well but still have potential, like AJ.

No overly aggressive 3-bettors behind

I'm avoiding to flat speculative hands like 89s or so, if there's some squeezers behind me. Same applies for hands like KJo, though I usually 3-bet them against weak openers. If there's some very loose 3-bettor behind you, you could sometimes adjust to this by flatting some stronger hands, but you need to have some sort of dynamics before that.

The reasonings above were not the only ones, but perhaps the most important in determining flat-ranges. You could also somehow determine these flat ranges when you are in position and you both are equally strong (or weak). I myself am using sth. like 35-50 % of villain's assumed Open raising range. For instance, if he is opening 20 % of his hands (in this case, about 21,27 %)

22+, A4s+, KTs+, QTs+, J9s+, T9s, A9o+, KTo+, QTo+, JTo

I can flat bu/co with hands:

TT-22,AQs+,KJs+,QJs,J9s+,T9s,98s,AdJd,AhJh,AQo,AdKh,AdKs,AdKc,AhKd,AsKd,AcKd,AdJh,AdJs,AdJc,AhJd,AsJd,AcJd

I get approximately 50,44 % equity against his range. I think it's even more than I would need, so I could add hands like 56s and 78s to increase my flatting range and have more value to my hits post-flop.

You could 3-bet some of those hands on my flat-range, depending on villain. In this example I have add some AJ combos into flatting range and others for 3-bet bluff. AA/KK/QQ are in my standard 3-bet range, JJ usually. All these ranges depend on villain's tendencies, but these kind of ranges I'm usually using to adjust my play against std. regs on my level. In Micros, balancing isn't that important, so you could do the same thing with whole group if you want to.

All in all, flatting can't be determined thoroughly mathematically. Your skills and villains skills determine the course of play, but you should always have some sort of a basic game plan for flatting pre-flop and adjust your play afterwards according to your villains. Whenever you are making your own flat-ranges pre-flop you should have somewhat close or even equity, but you can be a slightly dog when in position. You have so much more weapons there and you can decide the course of play from there.

Here's my thoughts for today, hopefully some will comment or tell me how wrong I am or that I missed something ♦ I guess I will make an otter article about flatting oop later, mostly to help my own play.

Had horrible sessions start today, down like 4 bin's and it was good continuation for yesterday evening's doom-switch ♦ After dat I tightened up my 3-bet ranges against maniacs and involved some flat-calling hands. Sometimes they outdrew my, no matter what I did, though :/

He haven't fold to flop cbets ip that often and with tp I'd bet even if he folds ♦ Turn is very bad card, coz his range is mostly Ax and maybe some TT, some Kx, so by betting I'd make him to fold worse hands and let him to continue better. Check/call was quite good here, as he could bluff once with worse, not twice. River was perfect card, reduces his Kx combos a lot. And he doesn't have a set as he would have raised flop or bet bigger on turn --> Donk to get max value from his Ax, he is not thinking about whether I busted a draw or not, but he is thinking that he has top-pair --> nuts...

By the way, I have noticed that people actually attack quite a lot on 3-bet pots against 1/2 pot. Ofc, it seems that their call 3-bet range is quite tight and mostly pp heavy, so no wonder they try to get it in on non-broadway board.. But why can't they do the same when I have e.g AA that I got to 3-bet ♦?

My main concentration is atm on NLHE, PLO is a side game that should be a bit of a fun for me. Overall, I'm concentrating on developing my hold'em skills and stop leaking with omaha. Omaha is a nice game and it seems to be suiting me as I can exploit villains quite well and I know the odds. It's better for me to play cash games PLO/NLHE than to play e.g NLHE/MTT's, as I'm smoking with MTT's luck factors ♦

I also have a plan for this double-gaming. As long as I can play both profitably, I can keep the PLO with me. As soon as I turn out from BE+ player to losing player, I'll take concentration on texas hold'em only. As simple as that ♠_biggrin:

1. Villain was rather aggressive all the time, but never raised a donk. Sample was too small, though. Now when he did it I put him on some sort of combodraw like GSSD+FD and maybe one K/A there. Decided to just call as this guy will continue his betting on turn, no matter what and by raising turn we can get our money in as favourite (on flop we would have been underdogs)

2. Villain is quite loose and donks flop with value-sizing, which indicates me that he might have top2p or set. When he calls my raise but donks pot on blank turn it's A L W A Y S set, most likely the best one possible as these guys usually just ch/ca with mid/bottom set ♦ Had odds to call and river was good card. AI and villain saw his money going away..

and another, in this case the board was ok to cbet as it hits somewhat my perceived range. After he called he was mostly on draws, so no need to bet turn with this weak hand. On river draws busted and these guys have absolutely zero bluff range and quite tight range for sd's with tp's, so decided to bluff bet. Worked as usual
