Burnt out grinder with(out) teeth

Won't play poker today as I'm rather busy with all random stuff!

Next week I'll start to play on NL10 once again. Hopefully I won't have to drop levels after that. BR is enough and last time I played I played solid and good poker that was way beyond average NL5 player ♦ I think I'll advance from NL10 to NL25 by the end of summer, perhaps I can even reach NL50. Hopefully I can get enough volume!

Pokerstrategy also gave me some money for Coral poker, hopefully they will deposit it to my account soon O_O

And what a day it was. Didn't play that many hands but ran like a hot chick with no clothes and villains gave me quite a lot value. Had some thinking there in hands, too, as some spots were somewhat tricky. Seems like there's some spewwhales ♦

1. Villain limpd/min 3-betted so I put him on broadway pair most of the time as these guys are afraid to play like this without sd value pre-flop. AK could do this, though. Call was necessary pre and after that flop I raise anytime as he could scare some turn cards and turn nit mode on. Ez money

Nice sessions today, though I didn't win that much all in all. My game was IMo quite solid and I had the right spots for 3-betting etc, but I felt myself way too tired to play that game for a long so I guess that's it for today. Some hands:

1. Dodging bullets. Flatted pre-flop as there was one very active 3-bettor on small blind. Didn't woke up, but the flop was good for me anyway. Turn was a scare-card, didn't want to bet and decided to bluff-catch river as raising has no value when no worse hand will call it..

And I have noticed that quite many player raise rather light in 3-bet pots vs 1/2 cbet, though It should be standard. I've been playing some thousands of hand in Stars now, and I have made these kind of notes about the players in general:

- They love to speww more than in NL2-5 or than in ipoker's NL2-20. Some of them play draws way too aggressive vs tight range and sometimes they overplay their air.
- Many player seems to be floating, as usual
- When you cbet less than 2/3 in 3-, 4- or 5-bet pots, your villains are likely to attack you. I guess they really think that it is weak to bet 1/2 on 3-bet pots. That could be used against those guys who raise light in position with air or stuff - cbet 2/3 against them with your air and 1/2 with hand that wants to get raised.
- People 3-bet lightish vs .25 openraise from bu, whilst they 3-bet a lot less versus .30 or bigger steal. That fact could be used to exploit some of my villains.
- People are not balanced with their 3-bet sizes - some of them 3-bet like 1.20 vs .25 steal, which is good for me, as I'm using that size with my whole range and I risk only .25 with my worse hands and I still might have AA in my pocket
- Some people are way too nitty and thus easily exploited as they fit/fold - this thing has no difference compared to NL2-5 or Ipoker
- I've seen even some Strategy members there. Some of them are way too nitty and would need coaching to find spots to bet or call. Turn raises are working quite well against them as they are too often giving up coz turn (min)raise equals nuts.

All-in all NL10 seems quite soft, though I have had a good run. One must be thankful for that as long as it lasts.

But yeah, here's one hand from today when I should have found a fold. Villain seemed quite nitty, and when he 3-bet flop I think his range is only sets/JTs. He doesn't have 98s in his UTG range but JT at least some of times. SO I THINK that I would have folded at least 77 in this spot..

Sometimes I like to make some texts about poker in theory and about poker strategies, too, so now it's a good time to make an effort. Today's topic will be about following your EV graph and letting it to effect your own game.

EV is just a graph for optimal play with exact 2 cards

Many of us have seen our EV graph going down for some reason. One time you might have had Aces and your villain was stupid enough to go AI with KK, though he is behind you. Now he differed from optimal play. But then all went wrong for you and he cracked your aces and hit his K on flop. Now your EV graph goes down.

In theory villain did play bad and he wouldn't have done that if our cards were face-up. But playing poker isn't actually about getting your opponent on exact range of 2 cards, but you play against ranges in most situations. In the given example, hero has AA, but if he could have JJ+, AK, then villain's play would be good enough against you in the spot and EV wouldn't be diving down. Trackers can't identify ranges, but they are making EV's on the exact hands. That would be good only, if we played with 10bb's or so stack (like in tournaments) or if we would actually be able to put villain on 2 cards. Because doing that is close to impossible, we can't watch too much to our EV graph.

Last example was one of the basic ones. But we are also having another situations that aren't seen that well in our EV graphs. Villain might call your pot-size bets with his flush-draw and hit river. Then he bets 1/2 of pot and you call. You lose.

Reality isn't like the EV graph there where you made stupid decision by calling river bet. Actually we were able to put him on a wider range. He has been floating with blockers, and he could play TP passive and value-bet small on river with it. Trackers just show the real ressult and the difference between your play and GTO.

Just to remind you: EV graph is a good measurement for your play, but you shouldn't keep looking at it too much. It also has some psychological effects.

EV might affect your A-game

Quite often one can see that a player complains about villain cracking your aces and stuff. You look to your EV graph and you think you played it all well. Of course, no problem with aces. But from time to time your EV graph might go up, even if you are not playing good. Sometimes players are having heaters and their graph just goes up and they win a lot. You still have to look to your game in depth, though, as all this might be just luck. You could even find out that you could have won 10 buy-ins more during your good run, but you played your hands weak. Still EV shows that you are a good player. One could also think that he played well when the EV graph goes up as we were against bottom of his range. If we knew that villain would shove pre-flop versus us 100bb deeps with QQ+, AK, and we call with JJ and he has AK. Looks good, we did well and won the hand post-flop! But actually we were about 64-36 dogs against his range here, so the play might not have been that good after all.

Most of the time the effects of high EV are shown when one is facing down-swing. You might think that you played well and did nothing wrong. You are not looking to your game coz this game was profitable a while ago - why wouldn't it be now? You could be doing huge mistakes there like calling pot bets with weak flush-draws and stuff. Last time you hit your hands, this time you didn't. Ev is cheating you a bit all-in all.

Many times people forget that EV goes both ways. Sometimes you are the one cracking aces pre-flop, sometimes it's your villain. Usually we only remember the times we had the better hand and villain was lucky and won. We are tilting a bit, having injustice tilt. We should remember that hero has sometimes done the same and it wasn't as expected either. Luck is a part of the game, too, so you can't forget it. Sometimes you are lucky, sometimes he is. It's just poker.

Now when I got into this analyzzzzzing partz here, I think here's one point about

WHY not to bluff-raise river on Micros against unknown

Hero's are always betting for value

3 barrels is with almost 99 % certainty a hand that has high sd value, TPTK+ most of the time. Ofc against lag's/maniacs/fish these hands can be different, but against Matt the Basic reg you are always facing strong range.

Hero's can't fold their good looking hand

Though the river might look bad for villain and he is planning to bet 1/2 and fold to raise, most of the time it fails and they level themselves to call you on river.

You are not exploited, even if you don't have bluff-range

Most of the regs aren't exploiting you there on river. You don't have to turn your hands into bluff, you can have only value-raising range on river. Ofc, with wider common history, you can try to raise river with busted draws etc.

Of course, from time to time you can find spots vs unk to raise it, but most of the time hands are ending with some hero call or you making even worse hand to fold.

Cool. One shouldn't look at results, but +5BI today, which is good for one day's work. Had some big hands again on this later session:

1. Good spot to flat pre - we can hit big and we plan to play our draws aggressive on some street. Occasionally we can take the pot down on flop. Nice flop for us, easy money. But got to wonder what did that one flatter did there? ♦

2. Well, in this hand against this villain I thought his range was weak and as I had the picture that he is somewhat nitty, I decided to raise and barrel that turn. Ofc when board is so dry I rep only sets, but I could do this with tp against good regs. Now river was my saviour. When he calls flop and turn I think he will call blank river with anything he called before, and he doesn't have sets in his range as he would 3-bet them most likely ASAP.

3. In this hand I was slowplaying great flop as there were no need to protect and they couldn't call my bets that wide. Turn was blankish, so bet. On River when my villain raises I was cursing my faith a little as he could have TT, but overall I think his range is mostly bdstr8, 8x, maybe even rivered 66 and then random spazz-outs. So had to stack-off as I was way ahead of that range.

5. A bluff-catcher hand. Villain looked fishy, though sample was small, so didn't have any POst-flop aggressions on him. I tanked a little on turn and called his raise, as he would most likely raise sets on that drawy flop and do this trick with draws/TP/QT/maybe MP/99/AT etc.

Bad news for once,

My HEM2 trial finally expired and I'm without a HEM atm. Not sure if I will be able to buy it right now as students are having hard time during summer seasons. I'll try to figure sth out, one option would be to formate this computer and then install HEM and use another e-mail to get this free trail. Not sure though if it is worth it ♦

Hard to make plans for gaming right now as my future is a bit foggy right now without hem. Hopefully Pokerstrategy will hold some offer campaign soon

get the HEM my friend, its worth it. 100% of all my friends who are making money from poker have some sort of software.

i mean its probably going to suck half of your roll... but try doing without it its about to get worse. thats why we bought because we lost like a few big pots which could have been avoided with HEM.

Well, it's going to eat only appr. 14 % of my roll. I'm sure that by using it I will keep on making profit. It just sucks that I ended up in this situation right now as I'm out of money in real life. We will see what's going to happen soon, next week I might be able to buy it.

And I totally agree with you, playing profitably without HEM is very hard in the long-run.
