Well things haven't been going so well, and I kept playing ang playing I think this lesson is something everyone should learn.

1. Tilt is real, it will happen to you, and focus on controlling it.
2. Always be sharpening you're skills, hours and hours of playing and not reviewing can dull your edge.
3.Tilt costs money
4.tilt costs money

What happened was I played and just stoped reviewing I was posting hands, but not going through my history check me calls. I was playing a little more lose, and well fishy. Making some werid calls, and it just cost me money. I am going to need to re-turn to my referance material, and just try to get these concepts nailed down.

I also started back into SnGs for a bit and just ran like 30BI's under EV so that sucked.

Pretty much back to square 1. Still refuse to quit. Going to review material, and get my game back. Play +EV game. I really am uncertain about a lot of things still, but it just screams that i need experience, and I am not playing enough hands, but i need to really think about what I am doing and not simply just autopilot. I am very glad I am playing nl5 where these lessons only cost small amounts of money, and not huge ones. I am not worried about getting to the next limit anytime soon.

I have noticed that when i really want to get good at something I go pretty hard at it then when i don't progress as fast as I want (usually unreasonably fast) I throw my hands in the air.

I am going to make mistakes. Everyone does, but I am still going to stand up one more time than the rest.

I have a goal of being in nl200 one day, and it will be a cold day in hell if I quit.

Hi,

I'm in a similar situation as you now (not sure exactly how bad it is for you though). But it's true, after grinding a while and doing okay you won't feel any need to review your game/hands and you start to lose control of your game when you think you are good enough to experiment (play looser, try thinner bluffs, fancy plays) and things eventually go wrong and then you realise there are many many leaks in your game.

It is by no means the end of the world/end of your career. I'm pretty sure many players go through setbacks like this. Just treat it as a lesson learned, have an action plan and move on

I think most of us have done similar things and on more than one occasion I have no doubt. I lose my way sometimes by not keeping up with reviews and analysis and trying to improve. It mostly happens when I'm winning, when I'm losing working on my game is easy...sound familiar?

My usual method of remedy is to go into default mode and get right back to basic, simple stuff to bring back the discipline and focus.

It would be interesting to hear how you get yourself out of the state of mind you're in.

Oh and make sure to have fun, :)

Mal.

Hey guys Thanks for the awesome feedback. The support is super appreciated.

I am not in a hole at all really. I am pretty much back to break even. So as gadget suggested I am going to go back to basic default. Stop the fancy plays, and just value bet/fold to crazy aggro from the loose passives.

A big leak was with the really bully types, I would call 3 streets with mid pair, and they would usually show up with top pair or something. I did some reviewing yesterday and I think that is the one group of people you have to play tricky against. Unlike the drunk that calls you light, the bully just trys to shake you off better hands. Generally it's when they start betting 0.5*pot and trying to keep you in is when you're in trouble.

In short I am going to play like I was before, and just not try to be fancy, it really doesn't help. Just focus on their ranges and spent the 40 minutes after going through the tricky hands, then posting them.

I might have said this before but when I am super into something like that I constantly want to learn about it and read about it. I think it takes a long time and experience to be super comfortable so I need to put in more volume before I start trying to evolve my game.

I have bought a lot of books looking for that one that will give me the "Ah ha!" moment postflop, and I think it's just going to come by putting in the time. So I am just going to keep at it. Going to watch Manu's series and study it carefully for my next theory section, then probs re-read Dan Harrington on 6max.

Bit of an update.

Past few days have been a rebuilding period. I have reviewed, and read articles and watched some videos. One thing I have done differently is actively watching the videos, i use to just have it on while on fb, and I think this is dangerous. You can really miss the point sometimes.

So, I spent a solid few hours today reviewing my hand histories and putting opponents on ranges. This really helps, I think the overall goal is to be able to do this without having to think too hard. I went through a good chunk of the learning path and did the quizzes. Then I watched the first two episodes of Knowing me knowing you. I spent a good few hours today just working on theory, and finding out why. I also found some of the leaks in my floating, and calling with midpair. When manu talks about calling a flop, there are 3 huge factors: Position, equity, and player type. Call calling a Cbet on a werid board, with midpair with out some kind of equity, Ie backdoor flush draw, gutshot etc. I have been playing too much in a vaccum.

Another thing i need to do is fix some 3b-ranges.

Monday is going to be the day, I get back into it. I also have some other surprise plans to help boost my winrate and confidence. It should be an exciting summer for chowchow.

Also, going to be pumping of the volume. In short:
No more friggen around. Time to get serious!

yes, simple, simple, simple, simple, but booooorrrrring...gg. If the fish get busy dont' try to out think yourself (or them) just fold if it aint the nuts, easy game; and no I don't care if you have put 1/2 your stack in and blah blah this and blah blah that;' but there's only one hand beats me....', just fold....er, most times :f_eek:

After that we'll see you at nl nosebleeds :)

Run good and make sure it's fun,

Mal.

Ok Boys and girls.

Tonight is the night before the big start up. I am going to be back at the gym 4 days of weight training and 6 days of cardio, plus 2.5 hours of poker plus work. I am going to be busy, and i like busy.

This blog is going to change. I know I have been posting rather freqently the past few days, but this is going to change and turn more into a weekly, or bi-weekly update. The main goal is to keep me accountable. I am going to get my exercises in, get my hands in, and put in a great days work 100%. Now like everything else this has goals in the end.

1st goal: After I start this year of university school pretty much took over my life. I stopped working out (I did it a lot!) drank way to many energy drinks and over worked myself at school. I pretty much just found myself over tired and grumpy. I got invited to a house boating event in BC and I want to start looking good for it. So This is going to be a a goal orientated work out plan. Eating clean, eating often. Weights and cardio. This is the only way to put on size while lowering your bf% significantly. I had done something like this before and went to being out of shape like i am now to having abs again. Put on some size, was great. Cardio is going to be 2X20 sessions, one High impact, one low. (Sprints and a face paced walk for example)

2nd goal:
I want to hit 25NL by the end of this year. I was thinking the end of summer, but by my calculations that just isn't really feasible. So to do this I am going to put in 2-2.5 hours of poker a day. While constantly working on my game so an hour of study on avg per day. (plus a suprise for later!) There is more to come of this, but for now the profits will be increasing. I will probably play more on weekends, as they are fish infested and definitely $$$EV. The reason I am giving myself a time limit and not a hand limit is because of the amount of tables I play. I want this number to increase, but increase naturally, and it will. I am feeling more and more comfortable with 4, so I hope to be at 5 by the end of next week. (with a goal of 8-10 in the end)

I also played just a bit the weekend and tried to get the hands where i felt the big leaks were and posted them on the forums with my thoughts. Overall what I thought was wrong was correct. Making some big changes, was playing too weak tight. So my value wasn't paying me off enough to be honest.

This is going to be a challenging summer, but i really like challenges, and I would be achieving 2 very difficult things. And this blog (and hopefully whoever reads this) will keep me accountable. The first 2 weeks are going to be the most brutal, and I am going through a change in exercise (getting back into it going to be sooore) and poke time. My work also is mentally demanding so I am going to enjoy the mental break at the gym. I have done stuff that has been tough like this before, and I will do it this summer. Going to take my bankroll and, in the words of TwiceT, move it move it up to the sky.

I have a feeling this should turn out to be a very exciting blog! I will also post some hands from the week that I found to be interesting, hilarious, or something i just want to brag about.

Training has begun!

ENTER THE CHOWCHOW!

Well I was hoping to come back with a post being like:
CRUSHED NL5 MAKING DA MONEYZ. I am down again. Pretty sure it is due to lack of skill. But as with anything I have to put a high amount of time and effort into I find it is is always darkest before the dawn. Been posting a lot more hands in the forums, and my volume is for sure going up, but this week was so busy with RL stuff that I didn't get the 2.5 hours everyday. However that is all over and done with now, and we have some smooth sailing from here on out.
Now for the surprise:
I decided to get some steady longish term coaching. So I decided to enlist for Manu's NL Crash course. I had my first lesson today, and it was really addressing a lot of my key issues here. I am really liking him as a teacher, so it was definitely a +EV move. I feel like this summer is going to be the summer where I will have the most amount of time to improve. The first lesson today dealt with why we bet and I found it very interesting. It was recorded so I am going to watch it again, and there is a lot of gaping holes in my game. He checked through some of my stats and found I was opening like 50% from sb? (WTF?) so That needs to change. Was losing a lot of money from there. Also my river calling is complete crap as well. I think this was because I was calling fish. not believing their hand, so this should fix itself overtime.

I also I not really thinking about the opponents range enough and really evaluating what they could of hit, and how much equity they have. As well as just auto piloting and Cbetting flops to hit. My thinking is really being challenged here which is good.

So when playing I am going to go through 3 key points:
What is the opponents range when calling/betting/limping
how did it hit this board
how does it relate to my hand
what action should i do

Hopefully this will become more and more innate as i begin to play. I clearly am not doing this enough and I think it's costing me the $$$.

I wish I could have posted a more "Good results" update, but this is really what it is, and this is the start of training. Like I said it is always the darkest before the dawn. My poker game will only elevate from here so I am going to work the S#$% out of it and crush some fish.

Off to play some sessions and practice what I have learned. I think I am going to update the blog Bi-weekly. Everyday seems like too much, and once a week feels too little.

Here is the update from my session. Must have had that post-coaching run good.
Really spent more time thinking about their range. Had one hand I went all in with that was a mistake. I have a problem letting go of 2pair, even though it was pretty damn obvious he had a straight, but other than that I have felt a lot more confident in my decisions. I bet for good reason, thinking about their range, and what they would call with. But after having that session I am completely wiped. My brain hurts. 2 45 minutes +1 30 minute session was enough.

Here is the good stuff!

So you can see the dip from me not wanting to let go of the 2pair. I think I should have played that hand completely different, and am going to post it on the forums.

Felt like lady luck rewarded me for making the positive changes to my game. Weekends are insane for bad players as well.

Been meeting some new people who are playing as well, some near my level and some more experienced. I am Glad I decided to take the NL Crash course with Manu. On a personal level I feel more comfortable with the mentor type, and I think it will help propel me to being a winning, crushing player. Was a good start anyway. I think having people in poker around you to talk to is really important to keep the motivation.

I really can't stress how much you have to thing in ranges. One texture of a flop would be a cbet for one player type and not for another. This is still something I am trying to work out, but this game is by no means standard.

Cheers to a small victory!

Well time for a big of an update:

Lesson one from Manu really had me go to work. I have been focusing on hand reading quite a bit, and something I have noticed is when I am really focusing on this stuff other parts of my game are kind of falling apart. In everything else I have done I remember this stage, it's a process and it means I am changing. This change has caused me to play a lot more passive which I really don't like, and I think once I can get that down I will be able to focus on other things. I am still a fish on the river. I am not sure why I am still calling down light. When I went to sleep last night I actually imagined myself folding all the spots where I didn't, and should have today.
Other than that BR has been up and down, but more or less BE, I am not surprised by this. I think of the learning process as fixing a car. You are going to have bits and pieces all over the floor and it may be a bit of a mess, but once you get everything bolted down it will run like never before.

Motivation is feeling better, but I still have a long way to go. Up to playing 2.5 hours as well, which is my time limit goal, up from 2. Been splitting it into 2 or 3 sessions. I feel even a 15 minute walk after an hour really helps me clear my mind.

Gym front is going well, I am still going, and have legs today. The diet is more relaxed that I would like, but I am hit frequent small meals, and I have to say I like it better. Still going through sugar/caffeine withdrawal though, which I think is affecting my mindset by making the losses harder, being tougher on myself etc.

All in all it is kind of going as expected. I am finding some of these stupid calls are costing me a decent amount of cash so that's my main focus, is laying these hands down, and confirming it is a good fold with hand reading.

That's all for now. Peace.

Had my 2nd Session with Manu today, and as Per usual it really helped show a lot of my problems. For one I am not really value raising enough. I also get scared and shut down on the scarey boards. Manu called it: "Monsters under the bed syndrome." I think it is true, so when I played my session today my focus was to not worry about that. And for the most part it worked out rather well. I think there was one 4 to a straight hand where checked behind with trips, and right away I realized that was a mistake. Bad chow! I had noticed some other things about when I play as well. I really notcied in 3 bet pots with a had like AQ, or AK when I wiff the board it gets sort of discouraged. I think this is being results orientated. At this point I kind of just give up on the board. Here is an example:

Poker Stars, $0.02/$0.05 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

MP: $7.42 (148.4 bb)
CO: $12.07 (241.4 bb)
BTN: $3.77 (75.4 bb)
SB: $6.34 (126.8 bb)
BB: $7.27 (145.4 bb)
Hero (UTG): $5.60 (112 bb)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with Q A
Hero raises to $0.15, 4 folds, BB raises to $0.45, Hero calls $0.30

Flop: ($0.92) 5 J 6 (2 players)
BB bets $0.65, Hero folds

I called because I had position with a suited AQ, and villian had a higher 3bet.

So Villian is a TAG who over my 100 hand sample cbets 80% of the time. While in these spots, I think the best play is just to fold it here, I get pretty discouraged. While I am going to post this in the hand forums about calling this 3bet in position, I really find that it is stuff like this that can hurt my mindset when a lot of this happens. Mainly because I am not sure if that was the right call, and how to proceed. I mean I can do some analysis on it, but I think it is similar to what I have done below, execpt I have 12% equity for turn, 24% for river, and I really am doubting those 6 outs are clean, as Ax makes up a lot of his range.

Another thing I get pretty unsure about is with draws. Here I am playing a Very aggressive tag, and flop an OESD:
Poker Stars, $0.02/$0.05 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 5 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

MP: $1.92 (38.4 bb)
CO: $5.61 (112.2 bb)
Hero (BTN): $5 (100 bb)
SB: $5 (100 bb)
BB: $17.70 (354 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with T Q
MP calls $0.05, CO calls $0.05, Hero raises to $0.20, SB folds, BB calls $0.15, MP folds, CO calls $0.15

Flop: ($0.67) J K 6 (3 players)
BB bets $0.48, CO folds, Hero calls $0.48

Turn: ($1.63) 2 (2 players)
BB bets $1.17, Hero folds

Now here I hit the OESD so I have 8 outs, and Villian bets 0.48/0.67 = 71% pot, but given he is pretty aggressive, something like a 17 AF over 155 hands. I felt like I had the implied odds to call. When the turn hits, he bets 71% again, and I give it up, even though I am pretty sure he was hitting the 70% and it feels like he is doing this with a king ish so KT KJ or 66 etc. So I had gotten unsure of what he would do if I did hit on the river, and I talked myself out of it. So given he is aggressive, and a reg I am willing to say he would bet fold river.

Now he was betting 70% each time, and I think on river if he would have bet I could have gotten a half-pot bet out of him. So doing some math. If he is going to go bet/fold bet/fold bet/fold

So on the turn we are investing 48c, and if he is indeed going bet bet bet with his TPK or set, we would be investing 48c to win 1.63 + 2/3 bet on the turn, and 0.5 pot on river so
48c/(1.63 + 1.17 +0.5(1.63+2*1.17) = .48/3.97 which is like 11% equity. Now the pot would have been big enough that I think may have even able to raise him and just get the rest of it in, but not sure. So now that I go through that I think I am a little happier with call flop fold turn, because on turn we are investing 1.17/((1.17+1.63+1.17)+2) = 20%
which we didn't have.

So hopefully that analysis is correct, if there are errors please let me know. Enough though I am in Geophysics I make simple math errors ALL the time. I think i re-wrote that 2 or 3 times.

This is going to be a bit of the new style of this blog, after listening to Manu I kind of want to pull away from the posting results a lot. I will probably post monthly results if I am super proud or something, but otherwise I just want to keep it on the mental game, how I am feeling etc.

Also been trying to do some bluffs when I am feeling like their weeks I had a 3bet hand where the player was pretty ABC, and he bet something like 1/3 pot, so I raised him and he called, but checked, I just felt like he was weak here, and I really didn't see much deception from him, so I fired a large turn bet and scooped the pot for 20BB, felt pretty good about that. I don't want to go over aggro though because I have been that guy in the past and it's -EV. Talked a little bit about barreling and bluff-raising with Manu, so that is something I find interesting. I think I have a better idea of how to do it though. Will have to ask him about it later.

Even just after writing the analysis I feel like I have learned a few things about my play, so I am going to keep doing stuff like this, and try to think about implied odds with player type in mind.

I know I had talked about being discouraged and stuff, but I do feel like I am playing better overall. At least more confident in a lot of my game.

That is about all I have to say for now.

@Hand 1:

Calling pre to fold often postflop against someone likely to barrel is not that great of a plan. You get some implied odds when you hit because he barrels but most likely you end up folding too often. Since he is 3betting against UTG, you can probably be OK with mucking preflop or turning it into a bluff. In general people don't 3bet so wide vs UTG but you still get OK folding equity with a 4bet against most, dk about this particular opponent.

@Hand 2:

The board has other draws as well so your outs are not always clean. I would say that since you don't have as many outs as you say, you can consider raising as a bluff having some equity. Calling flop is not a mistake either just some alternative to consider when people like betting a lot and your hand is weak to call very often. :) The calcs hurt my head at this time in the morning so might check later.

Volume has been terrible last week, over the weekend, and today. Last week we were getting power outages like mad, and i actually lost a few bbs from it, so I played when it wasn't storming. Sunday I went out to visit my Mom in a small down where I lived so I only got in an hour, and today I got like 30 minutes because I am sick like dog. Nausea kicked in, and i dealt out. Despite this I am running really well. Last time I checked my profit was as a new high, so hopefully this is a sign that I am no longer a BE player and now a small winning player. The consequence of all this, is not being able to practice the lessons from Manu, and not being able to analyise my hands. I have a pretty big back log, so judges look out! The coaching was great as usual, learned a lot about the topic, and that is player types. The coaching went well, I actually learned a lot about certain player types, which ones to play aggressively and which ones to play passively. Here is an example where I played a Bully, type..or overly aggro player, incorrectly:

Poker Stars, $0.02/$0.05 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

BB: $5 (100 bb)
UTG: $4.55 (91 bb)
Hero (MP): $5.03 (100.6 bb)
CO: $2.99 (59.8 bb)
BTN: $11.31 (226.2 bb)
SB: $13.38 (267.6 bb)

Preflop: Hero is MP with Q K
UTG folds, Hero raises to $0.15, CO folds, BTN raises to $0.35, 2 folds, Hero calls $0.20

Flop: ($0.77) 5 K 6 (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $0.35, Hero raises to $0.95, BTN raises to $1.55, Hero raises to $4.68, BTN folds

Here the player was super aggro 40/35 or something and a AF of like 16, so I played the flop, I raised a little on the small size to induce a 3bet, but instead of calling and letting him spew off the rest of his stack I 4bet shoved, and I did this for fear of the 56 double tone board. So I wanted him to bluff at me, but did not let him do it. Again monsters under the bed syndrome. Bad Chow!

Value betting and raising have been getting better, but I caught myself doing it again today:
Poker Stars, $0.02/$0.05 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

Hero (BTN): $5.05 (101 bb)
SB: $2.07 (41.4 bb)
BB: $2.18 (43.6 bb)
UTG: $5 (100 bb)
MP: $5.29 (105.8 bb)
CO: $5.09 (101.8 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with 2 A
3 folds, Hero raises to $0.10, SB calls $0.08, BB calls $0.05

Flop: ($0.30) 2 4 A (3 players)
SB checks, BB bets $0.10, Hero calls $0.10, SB calls $0.10

Turn: ($0.60) K (3 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets $0.35, SB folds, BB calls $0.35

River: ($1.30) 6 (2 players)
BB bets $0.50, Hero calls $0.50

Just called the river instead of getting the rest of the short stack. I could have easily gotten value from his lower 2p and Ax hands. but the board got a little connected and I got scared..the only thing that got there was 35.. given pre-flop action I could see it as a possibility, but I think villain would be raising before the river. So I missed out on da value, bad chow! I should have bet turn bigger as well so I could have shoved river. Still need to work on it! Been looking for other spots to do some barreling and bluff raising. Did a bit of it again yesterday, and it worked out pretty well. Barreling I think its very effective if you pick it properly, and I am a little scared I am going to pick the wrong spots, but that fear can make you do silly things.

Hopefully tommorow I will be feeling less ill, and can get back to playing my A game again! My over all confidence is higher, but being on a bit of a heater I think that I am getting anxious about playing and losing it or something. Which is dumb, because I have a winrate and it's going to converge in the long run, and with help from the hand evaluators, Manu, and my poker friends who are ever so helpful. The winrate is slowly climbing.

DaphunkSki, a member here, had me close out my profit graphs and session profit, so I am now playing not tracking my results, which I think is a great step since, it will just make my less results orientated. I have that dirty bug, and I am going to get rid of it.

This is it for an update for now, going to go to bed super early, and just try to get a good night sleep and get over this sickness, so I can get back to the tables and start trying to crush dem fishes.

Well today went kind of bad. I ended up breaking (probly, maybe up a little bit) even thanks to a fellow who wanted to slowplay aces. I had made some good barrels, and some good raises, but I also made some horrible ones. There are a few that stick out in my mind on a paired board, and the villian was tighter and he cbet 80% so I decided to bluff raise him off the hand, as I felt it was profitable he called, and the turn went check, check, and river I thought it would be a good idea to fire another big bullet. Was a terrible idea, he had the goods, and i looked like a fool. Got owned right there. I felt like I was going back to my old ways of calling the river down too wide. So I shook my head and got back into it. Made some pretty good decisions, I feel, on value betting, and playing player types. So if I hadn;t made a few of those dumb call downs, I would probely be in a little better shape today. Also still have monsters under the bed with wet boards..unsure if the raise was good here:
Poker Stars, $0.02/$0.05 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

BB: $7.61 (152.2 bb)
UTG: $11.76 (235.2 bb)
MP: $5.85 (117 bb)
CO: $9.64 (192.8 bb)
Hero (BTN): $6.09 (121.8 bb)
SB: $2.63 (52.6 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with 9 9
2 folds, CO raises to $0.15, Hero calls $0.15, 2 folds

Flop: ($0.37) 7 3 9 (2 players)
CO bets $0.30, Hero raises to $0.90, CO folds

I don't want to sound results orientated but the board being connected was kind of scarey, the villian was pretty tight though, raising from CO, arg 68 and T8 get the strainght and a then .25 of his suited range gets the fd. But turn I might have been able to get another bet. Kind of hoping he might get it in with his over pairs. Not sure, going to post it.

All in all with being sick my motivation to play is pretty low, I have only been playing an hour a day. I am hoping it is just the sickness. Making some dumb call downs always kills the motivation for me for a day this is something I'll need to work on. But I keep thinking to myself if all this time and money I have investing is worth it? Anyway that is it for now. Going to wake up early and post all the hands I marked. Should be fun. Definitely got a little bit owned+lucky today. That's all for now. Run well everyone!
