hey antstruck thanks for dropping by :f_biggrin: what site are you playing at? how long have you been playing for?

RasTweet told me to crush some fish this weekend, so i did (not sure if he was a fish, was playing on anon tables):

Prima, $0.05/$0.10 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

CO: $9.03 (90.3 bb)
BTN: $10.36 (103.6 bb)
SB: $19.28 (192.8 bb)
Hero (BB): $13.92 (139.2 bb)
UTG: $5.37 (53.7 bb)
MP: $14.27 (142.7 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BB with T Q
3 folds, BTN raises to $0.30, SB folds, Hero calls $0.20

Flop: ($0.65) K A 2 (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $0.50, Hero calls $0.50

Turn: ($1.65) J (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $1.20, Hero raises to $3.95, BTN calls $2.75

River: ($9.55) A (2 players)
Hero bets $4.30, BTN raises to $5.61 and is all-in, Hero calls $1.31

Results: $20.77 pot ($1.03 rake)
Final Board: K A 2 J A
BTN showed K K and lost (-$10.36 net)
Hero showed T Q and won $19.74 ($9.38 net)

my river sizing was pretty fail though. i got a bit excited. 2nd royal flush, and this time in parsley as pleno would say!

recently discovered a gaping hole in my game...... COLD CALLING. i cannot believe how bad i am in these spots. for that reason, i'm running the filter for when i did cold call IP. at nl10 i have 2.5k hands where this happened and i will spend the next week analysing 100 hands a day from the last 1.5k hands. next week i'll do the same but for OOP play. i hope i can plug this leak!

in fact... this is not a leak, this is a burst water main!

Hey!
Nice blog!
I am currently playing NL5 SH after a break and finding it tough to get into the swing of things.

Cold calling is always pretty weird to me, i really do it as little as possible. (Which sucks cause it can be profitable!) I look forward to see what you learn from hand analysis, so i can apply it to my own game

Good luck at the tables!

hey Chowchow, welcome :) yeah CCing is pretty essential. i never used to do it without PPs while i was playing fullring, but i wasn't too good back then.

Day 1 of my review
ok so i won't actually log every day of this review, but whenever i notice interesting things about my game i'll post something.

first off, i spent quite a long time over the weekend digging up some forum threads, strategy posts and ANY info i could about cold calling strategy. found some really solid stuff, but i have to say it's limited (just like there seems to be such limited info about playing from the blinds X( )

over the weekend and today, i spent a lot of time making notes on the info i could find and going over it to try and stick it in my damn brain. some of it may seem stupidly obvious to lots of people, but to me poker seems so complex i rarely see the bigger picture and often i need it spelled out to me like a fish :f_biggrin:.

possibly the most important thing that gave me a bit of a (primitive) aha moment was about planning. in short...

BLUFF or BUST

that is, when you cold call preflop we should NEVER EVER be thinking in a vacuum. we call either because we have solid implied odds (with no overestimating!) with a speculative hand, or we call because we think we can bluff villain at a later stage of the hand. to me that mainly means floating, but i know it also means bluffraising at some point - something i need to start learning to do. this thinking opened my eyes a lot because i was calling preflop with a ton of random junk, and i know i rarely considered postflop!

since studying this stuff i feel much much more confident. not necessarily confident that i'll play correctly, but confident that i can at least reason my aims and goals logically. i feel like im no longer playing on autopilot which has to be good. whether i see any results from this i don't know, but it surely won't be a bad thing.

so onto the leaks... generally, most of what i've seen that relates directly to cold calling/flatting in the blinds stems almost entirely from what i just mentioned above. im simply not planning well which means...

:diamond: bad hand selection in certain situations
:diamond: making postflop plays that simply will not work, and the only reason why i still did it was because i wasn't paying attention to planning and i wasn't adjusting well to my opponents.
:diamond: poor hand selection in the BB specifically. this stood out a lot, and im a little spewy. i tend not to give much credit to SB opens lol. but who does...
:diamond: not paying attention to my opponent's bet sizings. seems i either value town myself by bluffcatching when they never bluff, or i end up skipping possible +EV spots by giving up without considering a bluff raise against a weak line.

about this last point, im not so sure i'll jump too quickly to change it. i mean i'll still pay attention to bet sizing and everything but i wont suddenly start bluffraising when i think villain is weak. i'll observe and experiment very carefully and learn as much as i can about it at some point once i've finished this review.

maybe i'll post some interesting/terribly played hands at some point

That was actually super helpful. Cold calling is talked about very little, but with that mindset towards it, it puts things into perspective. We are doing it cause we think we can play a big hand, or we are going to pull them off a better hand. Very good to know! I guess this is why it's not talked about so much since, on the micro stakes, we can't make a lot of people fold. Also why its used a lot of pp in FR cause we can get their full stack. This very well may be stated somewhere and i missed it. (I miss the obvious things sometimes haha.)

Thanks, and again good luck!

glad it was helpful :) and yeah the main point to take home is pretty much what you'll hear bogdan saying a lot: don't call just to hit! pretty simple when you think about it like that. just have a plan for what you're going to do and don't try to bluff the unbluffable!

Yeah, I say that and I know that, but if you look at my last blog you wouldn't think that i knew that. I hope you ran ( and played) better than i did today!

still running good over a small sample. volume for me lately has dropped dramatically since i stopped zoom, but i'd like to think i'm less tilty. i still feel sort of like im clawing back a lot of my bankroll but i don't feel so much in the "danger zone" for nl10 anymore which is awesome. playing pretty conservative seems to work well for me... for now!

about the review, went over a few more hands the last few days but it's mostly the same old pattern. so i'll be working on BB defence ranges and planning still. something new that i'll look into studying is limpers and i'll probably run a filter for that too once i finish going over some articles on it. i think it's extremely important to actually understand what's going on with it and exactly what sort of limper you're facing. especially when half the player pool does it!!!

beautiful.

Stacks:
UTG ($10) 100bb
CO ($13.01) 130bb
BTN ($15.94) 159bb
DrDunne (SB) ($11.66) 117bb
BB ($10.18) 102bb

Pre-Flop: ($0.15, 5 players) DrDunne is SB 6♦ A♦
UTG checks, 1 fold, BTN calls $0.10, DrDunne calls $0.05, BB checks

Flop: 5♣ 2♦ 8♦ ($0.25, 4 players)
DrDunne bets $0.30, 2 folds, BTN calls $0.30

Turn: Q♦ ($0.85, 2 players)
DrDunne bets $0.85, BTN calls $0.85

River: 9♣ ($2.55, 2 players)
DrDunne bets $4, BTN raises to $11.25, DrDunne goes all-in $6.41

Spoiler

Final Pot: $23.37
BTN shows
K♦ 3♦
DrDunne shows
6♦ A♦

DrDunne wins $22.35 (net +$10.74)

BTN collects $0.84 (net -$11.66)
BB lost $0.10

what do we think of the overbet on the river? my thinking at the time was he can easily have a strong hand for calling down like this in an unraised pot. he can have weaker flushes, he can have a straight that got there on the river and he *could* have a set but i think he will mainly raise these ott by the latest. just thought my only way of really maximising value will be to overbet. if he has any of the above hands then he probably hero calls.

so after my bankroll nearly died i did a ton of studying and ended up on a massive massive 10k hand heater. i'm back and rolled for nl25 :f_cool: - but i won't be shooting/caring like i was before, just playing normal tables if they look fishy and i feel good about my game.

about normal tables, i realised im not doing too bad if i remove all fast-fold poker from my game. so normal tables ftw (until i stop being a fish)

too tired to play so i'm reviewing my day. i'll post some hands from the session(s).

===============================================
===============================================

aaaand one stupid calldown vs an unknown (later turned out to be a nit... ). my thinking was ott he bets all his floats and strong hands. thought these were FDs and SDs if he has these. when the board developed as it did i couldn't resist stationing.

BTN showed 4 4 and won $22.15 ($10.73 net)

=========================================
=========================================

and last hand: villain was really fishy and passive. so i decided to bet turn again to charge his weaker PPs, FDs and SDs and whatever other crap he wants to call again with.

SB: $25.78 (103.1 bb)

Hey Lewis!

Hand 1: I think you should bet bigger ott. You miss value there and not just there but also on the river obviously. If he's bad and he's calling he's calling every sizing and if he's folding he's folding to every sizing. So ott I think you can bet around $4. River the pot would be around $12,7 and you could bet like $10 then or so.

Hand 2: If you think he's on a draw you should bet and never ever check. a) he might check behind and get to his draw cheaply and b) if he bets river you're going to have to bluffcatch some of the time and that sucks.

Hand 3: :rage: why is he even in the pot?

Why do you berate yourself for the call in the 2nd hand Lewis? Literally all the draws missed so he has so much that stabs there. The only thing is that maybe we'd be better bluff catching A9/97 here since we block some combos of QT/KQ with our Q, which makes it slightly less likely he has a busted draw at river. Anyway, GL @25 mate.

well im not berating myself, it shouldn't be too bad i dont think maybe ras is right and just betting myself would be better and also buy me a free showdown. at the time i was thinking he's a reg and so i can't really get THAT thin value vs him - he'll either fold or continue with better. so i decided to just let him float since most of the time that will be his plan from preflop.

that's a good point about blocking some of those hands... didn't think about that
