Hey SirVanek!

Watch out for my freaky "what was the action again?" donk plays!

I have to say though, the play is way looser at FTP, which is nice. I think this is typified by the amount of chat I've been getting - or maybe Americans are just louder... It was actually quite enjoyable chatting with a couple of folks at the end of my session today. I'm not sure they thought it was enjoyable, but I found it funny. :f_biggrin:

Anyway, say g'day if you see me... I try not to use chat too much as a rule, if at all, but If I see it I'll say hello! And good luck fella! _cool:

Have you ever looked up what type of learner you are? I personally find it alot harder to process information such as articles or videos because i learn best through discussion.

Also i presume you know this already but you can get free stoxpoker + cardrunner membership if you earn enough ftp lie 3.5k for stopoker 8k for cardrunners aswell. you just have to register through some site (jus google it.)

A guys' gotta have standards. :f_p:

Actually, I meant to ask you about that.. it was at some nasty low limit FR NL as I recall... and you were sitting out for most of it. I figured it was identity theft. :f_eek:

Okay yous fullas.

The pre conversion Waiboy (ie still playing more than studying - but not by as much as before) continues on up to Christmas. So as a small update on whazzup:

I'm making the 200 FTP each day bar one so far this year which puts me in line for the full Ironman. I'm not specifically putting in volume for it though, it's just that by the time I feel like stopping I'm usually close enough to make playing another 3/4 hour worthwhile. TBH once I hit enough for the Gold Ironman level I'll probably switch off the playing mode for the year, and really hit the books... unless I'm at a loose end of course!

It doesn't actually make much difference in any case, as there is so little value in making the Iron man status for me. Still, it is just something that sits there.

Of more interest has been clearing the FDB which is now $160 gone. I figure even if I run horribly I shouldn't be able to lose $600 for the period until its cleared (valid until the end of March) so no matter what I will hopefully end up with more than my initial FTP BR of $600. Once again I stress I"m not grinding specifically to clear this, but again it is something in the periphery that catches my attention.

Current BR: ~$600. Hit mass +ve variance last night on $1/$2 FR table that was looose as anything. Purgatory continues to provide plenty of swinging; Austin Powers eat your heart out baby, YEAH! Still, I've had some come back at this limit too so that has helped things.

I haven't played any NL since the AA trainwreck days, although I have studied some of the articles and hope to play some live somewhere between Christmas and New Years as light entertainment (ie not poker related, but entertainment related). Still, I'll be playing as best I can through the alcoholic stupor I most likely will be experiencing!!! :f_thumbsup:

As one side note too, the fitness side of things is starting to come along. I'm getting out at least three times a week for 20-30 mins at a time, which is small beer but a start. I'm thinking about getting keen and running in the RunAuckland series of 10k events that start in March next year as a bit of motivation. I'm keen to run a second marathon at some stage, so maybe I'll aim for the Auckland marathon in October/November next year. Still in the preliminary stages so far, so we'll see how we go.

Anywhom, this is a more positive (results oriented FTL) :f_confused: out.

i realize i've been gone a long time Mr. Waiboy. but do you really expect me to believe that your BR is $600?

P-fizz!!! I was ruminating on your poker playing status only a few days ago.

Psychic engergy FTW!

To answer your question:

1. Don't let the glittering diamond fool you (I know, you are a girl, so distraction is kinda inevitable) but I won this status in a game of chance. _cool:

2. I've finally made a withdrawl from my playing roll after aeons of grinding at Mansion. If I were to include all that rakeback, I'd be at around $2k or so. But I'd rather have the cash. _cool: _cool:

3. I know you don't believe me, but I'm actually not that good! Getting better all the time, but this dude is less Chuck Norris in poker form, and more the Little Engine That Could.

But enough about me. How'dya be? Still saving lives, smoking up lenses and (more importantly) pwning at that odd game NLHE?

I said a game, FLSH is an allegory for life. _cool:

you're not chuck norris?? i've been deceived! i may never speak to you again. ooh is that a diamond? wow, shiny. care to flip a coin for it? i've got heads.

hmmm.. now what was i saying?

forgot. anyway it's good to be back if only to read your blog where people can say words like 'ruminating' and get away with it. i havent saved any lives, smoked any lenses nor pwned any game (except maybe Hearts, FreeCell & Minesweeper) lately. got sucked into the vortex of life and did absolutely nothing out of sheer necessity. i know that's kind of hard to understand but ur a boy so dont worry about it. :f_cool:

LDO. I have to read, comprehend and empathise all at once. Add breathing into the mix and I'm at male multi-task overload. :f_ugly:

Hope there's light appearing at the end of that vortex, and that it isn't the tractor beam of an incoming intergalactic battle cruiser operated by ill tempered amoebic xenophobes having a bad day.

$.50/$1 SH is turning into my new $1/$2 SH - as it should when you play badly and run badly:

I'm at -2.5BB/100 through 12.5k hands 36/67 WTS/W$SD, table/seat selecting (mostly) religiously ie sometimes it may take a couple of rotations before I notice I'm in TAGville.

Fortunately, I'm still running at 9.0BB/100 through 1.2k hands at $1/$2 FR and a sensible 1.5BB/100 at $.50/$1 FR through 3.0k hands, so my wrists remain intact.

So reduced rake + looser opponents + lots of bad play = -2.5BB/100 compared to 30k hands at iPoker since September running at 0.2BB/100.

Sorry, I'll stop whinging someday - weeks of solid poor results propped up by ridiculous +VE variance at $1/$2 FR is weighing heavy on my soul. And sharing is supposed to be good for the soul. Well, it's good for my soul.. not sure what it does for your soul. Probably nothing particularly good.

So, logically, damaging your soul is good for my soul. How would James Brown feel about that? I guess he'd get down.

Going out on a limb here...

But why don't you stick to FR? Untill your more solid in theory?

Over the entire course of this phone book.. err blog, its been kinder to you.

Thanks 897. It's definitely been something I've considered since moving to FTP, where FR grinding at decent tables is actually possible.

TBH though, the FR results are still the result of variance. My plan remains pretty much the same in that I'll keep going for the next few days until Christmas, then I'll stop the grind for realz, and become a poker studier, with a little playing added in.

And besides, I have to succeed at SH if I want to move up limits, and moving up limits is the only reason to keep playing. I can't get anywhere playing $.50/$1 SH, I can't get very far playing $1/$2 SH, but I do get there twice as fast. Erm, if you take my meaning...:f_eek:

This month has been a bit of a setup for me, as I bought myself another grind with the FDB, but one that has a reasonably foreseeable end to it (ie about three days - maybe five depending on how the iron man thing goes, as I'm up for $75 in rakeback/Ironman). And from next month I can concentrate on doing the things that make my game better. I don't think playing much is high priority on that list. :f_cool:

Then again, I'm a degen. :f_thumbsup:

Hey Waiboy...

Had a few moments so decided to catch up on your blog... feel privelaged as it's cutting into my holiday time :f_p:

Anyway, as for what 897 commented, FR/SH? well, I know you'll stick to SH cos you're a masochist as your entire blog proves... but one thing that I can recommend now that I have finished it is read The Poker Mindset... Much of it I know you have to terms with already but there are infinite little pearls in there that fine tune the understanding... especially when it comes to the learn/play balance... Also I am going to keep it handy as a guide book as it's easy to flick to a certain section when something, anything begins to impact on your game...

Oh, 897, you read it too... trust me!

Anyway, laters... and have fun :f_ugly:

Bloody hell Nick - you only have so many minutes before you go back to Canada - I can wait! Obv England aren't much of a watch so I guess I can understand you looking around for alternatives. :f_p:

But seeing as you have taken the time, I appreciate the recommendation. I've always kinda dismissed the more esoteric aspects of poker playing as, brass tacks, bloody obvious. As I read more and more though, I understand that like many texts on these types of subjects, it is the thoughts that are triggered and highlighted when reading that provide the value.

In any case, anything that advances any aspect of poker playing is relevant. The mindset side of things is something that requires so much discipline and can go awry in so many ways, and something I have come to appreciate is of more value than I have believed it to be in the past. I think The Poker Mindset probably sits at the top of my to buy list, ahead of Kill Everyone and the Mathematics of Poker.

So I'd better get out my yellow body paint. :f_thumbsup:

I've just gone b/e (well, technically down $20) for my lifetime results at $.50/$1 SH after ~97k hands, courtesy of now being $350 down for the month through 13k hands at -2.77BB/100.

So if 100k hands is what it takes to begin to determin win rate, and it is statistically massively improbable that a winning player can be break even at 100k hands, and the fact I know I make way too many errors when playing, means I think FR should be my modus operandi from here on.

An admission of failure then, but not a huge surprise I guess. I just hope my heater at $1/$2 FR levels out rather than freefalls, and that $.50/$1 continues to treat me okay.

I'm not even sure that dropping to $.25/$.50 SH makes any sense, given that the worse players will just mask my deficiencies and make me feel like moving up again. I don't think playing SH is necessary to learn the theory, and I have a huge database of hands to review if I need to apply theory to specific hand examples.

If/when I complete my study goals then I will re-evaluate, otherwise (aside from clearly horrible tables at which I may try my luck at on occassion) I think I'm gonna be a FR jockey for a while.. until I start losing there too, then $.25/$.50 FR here I come!

:f_confused: out.

I think Nick took a Job with a publishing company.

I'll get the book!!

Ok seriously I hope your having a great Vacation.

Now back to Waiboy....

Dude, I just want to let you know that you are not doing a horrible job or anything...
Piles and piles of regs are B/E over way more hands than that and they are happy
with it because they just mass multi table and collect rake back and bonuses
to make any profit.

And I know you are not Mass Multi Tabling, but alot of them that I read about in forums
scattered across the internet didn't bother to improve before mass tabling for rakeback.

So you have the edge there!!

When you get your theory more solid while hanging out in FR land, when you come back youll
be better than alot of the regs.

Also IDK if its just me but I found the rake adds up extra fast
at FR, I was only playing 3 tables of .25c.50c or maybe .5/1
Its been a while, but I had unlocked the card runners account
extra fast, and I remember clearing that $100 bonus really fast too.

Nah, you shouldn't sitout when you are in a TAGville, most of the TAGs on ftp 0.5/1 SH are pretty bad, they are giving away $.
Anyway SH tables are pretty bad these day ~20:00-22:00 GMT (if i remember correctly i did see you online at that time), they get much better like 3-4 hour later.
