"Why call on the river?"

Another week, another controversial hand decision. This week, our focus turns to Spanish community member robincasas who found himself being dealt pocket 8’s in a PokerStars, $0.10 / $0.25 No Limit Hold'em Cash game with three others.

Heads up on the flop, the table was given , , before a dropped on the turn and finally a landed on the river giving him a straight, after which our hero folded walking away empty handed.

As you might expect, after sharing details of the hand in the forums, the usual wealth of opinions came flooding in. allinjota would have chosen to bet/fold, while a disagreeing reg87 would have called even in case of a re-raise because the Hero’s hand was protected by two blockers.

This opinion is backed up by msampi who agrees with reg87 but also takes the time to highlight that short-stacked opponents can historically be more aggressive. Given this, could also a check/call be a valid option?

Last Week's Poll Results

Remember last week's River poll when norris80 folded late on with a pair? Well, the communities have all had their say.

The popular decision was to Bet/Fold on the turn as the graph below shows

That said, the communities were split with some voting for a turn bet/fold and others for a check on the turn, folding on the River. In four other communities there was a tie as to what the best move would have been.

The most undecided community was EN with 22% check-turning or calling the river while a slightly more popular move was to check turn/fold the river, favoured by 34%.

A further 31% would have bet/folded the turn leaving 13% to bet/call at the same point.
