85 WSOP bracelet events to take place online
GGPoker and WSOP.com are going to host the first fully online World Series of Poker starting next month.
Following a very successful WSOP-C online, the World Series of Poker has announced that 85 WSOP bracelet events will take place online this summer between July 1 to September 6.
31 events will take place in the United States at WSOP.com (which is only open to Nevada and New Jersey) and 54 will take place at GGPoker with their global poker base.
Individual bracelets have been awarded before on WSOP.com during the World Series of Poker but this is the first time players outside of the US have been able to compete for the titles from their home. GGPoker surprised everyone to be the first global site to host a global WSOP Circuit festival but they knocked it out of the park, generating over $134 million in prizes.
The 34 bracelet events in the US will take place at WSOP.com between July 1 to 31. The GGPoker bracelet events will be contested over 50 days between July 19 and September 6. The schedule has not been released yet and will be announced in stages over the next few weeks.
Last week GGPoker announced their high stakes tables will be real name only, and one might suspect that bracelet events too will have this stipulation. Select events will be streamed live on PokerGO.
Live WSOP still expected this year
“It wouldn’t be Summer without WSOP” said Ty Stewart, Executive Director of the World Series of Poker. “While we are thrilled to be reopening our venues and optimistic about future offline events, we couldn’t be more excited about deepening our relationship with GGPoker and watching some history unfold online this summer.”
The World Series of Poker was postponed this summer with the expectation that it will take place in Autumn. That looks more likely now as Las Vegas casinos have reopened, but poker is still short handed to maintain social distancing rules. This appears to be an addition to the WSOP proceedings this year, not a replacement for that rescheduled live series.
This is a remarkable achievement for GGPoker who at the start of this year were still a relatively niche poker room, albeit a very innovative one. They really have been poker's winners since the lockdown, establishing themselves as a major force on the world stage.
