Interview with YourDoomPoker

PokerStrategy.com: Hey Ryan, How did you get into poker and where do you stand now?

yourdoompoker: In my private coaching thread, which you can find here, I actually have a great story about how I went from playing $10 SnG's on PartyPoker to being the #1 overall winner at $10/$20 NL on PokerStars in 2010, but the short version is that I started playing $2/$4 Limit Hold'em at the casino when I turned 21 and was terrible at it. I really had no idea what I was doing. You can say I've come a long way since then.

More recently, from June 2008 - April 2010, $3/$6 NLH was my main game and I beat that level at exactly 5.76ptBB/100 (11.52bb/100), which is the absolute highest winrate at that level on PokerStars for any significant volume.

In April 2010 I moved from $3/$6 to $10/$20 as my main game. I beat $10/$20 NLH at 4.86ptBB/100 (9.72bb/100) and had the #1 highest amount of winnings at that level of any Pokerstars player for 2010 (and #2 in the world among all tracked sites.)

PokerStrategy.com: How has poker influenced your lifestyle? Are you currently a pro?

yourdoompoker: Being a poker professional actually forces me to maintain a very healthy lifestyle. I do not play a single hand before hitting the gym for a morning workout. I've also found that maintaining a healthy diet of quality organic meals also helps to keep my mind sharp. I try to avoid eating a lot of sugar or anything deep fried.

I am certainly a professional poker player.  However, since Black Friday I have actually been spending the bulk of time doing private coaching.

PokerStrategy.com: What are your goals with teaching? What can our members expect from your videos?

yourdoompoker: The goals with my videos are to allow intermediate to advanced players to take their game to a whole new level.

PokerStrategy.com: Which of your skills are the most helpful when it comes to educating poker players?

yourdoompoker: I am a former high school math teacher. I have a Master's degree in secondary math education, so my background helped me become a good teacher. Some people are great players but may not be great teachers.

PokerStrategy.com: What's the best way to learn poker as you see it?

yourdoompoker: Well to learn the basic ABC's of poker there is a wealth of information all over PokerStrategy.com that will be extremely useful to you.

But if you're already "good" at poker and want to get even better, I believe that you need to have a top coach to get you there. Anyone who tells you that they are 100% self-taught, isn't realizing their full potential. It is critical to have another top mind to be able to work with and to be able to bounce ideas off of.

Luckily for me, my younger brother is another top online pro. We helped and continue to help each other reach our full potential. Neither one of us could of gotten where we are today on our own.

PokerStrategy.com: What kind of content can we expect from you short-term, what are you planning long-term?

yourdoompoker: My first two videos are on advanced unconventional lines for Diamond members.  My third video will also be very advanced, and will also be available to Platinum members. If you're a serious player, I am certain that you will be happy that you watched them.

As far as long term plans, I do plan to continue to make videos.  But since I don't really like to make plans to do anything more than a week in advance (smiles), you'll just have to wait on the details of those...

PokerStrategy.com: What is there to know about the person behind the screenname?

yourdoompoker: I am extremely active and play in various soccer, hockey, volleyball and football sports leagues.  I also love to travel and try to do it frequently.  My favorite place to visit is Costa Rica. I am actually co-owner of a rental house near the beach.

So if anyone happens to be planning a trip to Costa Rica and is looking for a great rental house, feel free to contact me for details.  I'm now offering a 10% discount to all PokerStrategy.com members! (smiles)

PokerStrategy.com: Any last words for our community?

yourdoompoker: Yes, please visit my private coaching thread here on PokerStrategy.com.  Even if you can't afford private coaching at this time, there is a great story about how I moved up in stakes over the years that I think you'll enjoy. Thanks for reading my interview.
