News: 7 tips for Spin & Go

How big a bankroll, ROI, ITM%, how many recs play and how to play a big multiplier? Our coaches answer the big questions.

There are a lot of misconceptions about Spin & Go, both about how profitable they are and also how to beat them. This week we got the team at SpinLegends to share some tips which also clear up some of those common misconceptions.

Why are Spins profitable in the first place?

coffeeyay: Spins are profitable for the same reason as any other poker variant. In the long term, you are able to build up an edge from making better decisions on average than your opponents. Spins have a lot of different types of decisions due to the combination of 3-handed situations and heads-up situations all played at a variety of strategically different stack depths. This means a strong Spins strategy gains a lot of edge from opponents who are not masters in every type of decision that comes up.

What do you think is the pro to recreational ratio compared to other formats?

coffeeyay: It's hard to estimate these things but roughly the ratio of recreationals to regulars in Spins for a given stake is similar to the same ratio in an average field-strength MTT of some equivalent stake.

I think this relatively soft metagame, combined with the ability to play a large number of tournaments per month (especially compared to MTTs), makes Spins one of the top formats (likely the very best) in terms of efficiently converting your skill edge into hourly profit.

Aim for a 37% ITM (or higher)

What should your ITM % be?

Skon94: To play Spins you need to have an expected ITM very high: I recommend it should be more than 37%, it's necessary to reduce the variance of the game.

What should you do when you hit a big multiplier?

Skon94: I try to play with a more aggressive style. Recreational players tend to be very nitty in those situations because of the great prize and this is something we have to exploit.

What other mistakes do new players make in these games?

Skon94: One of the most common mistakes I've seen is that they tend to play too passive and they have a low VPIP.

What should your bankroll be if you want to play Spins?

Epistokrat (Known as Karcist at PokerStrategy.com): In Spins you will encounter a lot of variance, therefore I advise you to use a dynamic bankroll management strategy. That way you have an aggressive strategy moving up in stakes and it should feel natural for you to switch between limits. A static strategy would require a very big bankroll.

I advise you to move up in stakes whenever you have 150 buy-ins for the next stake, and move down whenever you have 75 buy-ins left for your current stake.

For example, If you are playing $7s:

You need $2250 to move up to $15s
You move down with $525 left to $3

ROI is not the best metric

What is a good ROI to aim for?

Epistokrat: First of all for this format the ROI is not going to be the best indicator.

We have to adjust our actual expectation, as the highest tiers are quite unlikely to hit and you may never hit the highest tier in your whole poker career to realize your ROI. Like in finance it is reasonable to discount this ROI for practical purposes. You should just see it as a potential bonus if you are lucky enough to win one, so don't get demotivated by running below EV.

That said, Spin & Go is arguably the most profitable format today, even not considering the highest tiers. How well you are doing is best estimated in expected chips per game. A reasonable target should be around 55-70 chips per game depending on stakes. That means you can be profiting even when you would only hit the lowest three tiers which is super pessimistic estimate. And of course there will be tons of rakeback.
