Column: Bet Turn for Free Showdown (2) - With the Initiative

MiiWiin is back with a new No Limit column for Silver members and above. The second part of his "Bet Turn for Free Showdown" series focuses on situations with you as the pre-flop aggressor. In various examples you will learn when you should and when you shouldn't bet the turn for a free showdown.

Turn play is one of the most difficult aspects in No Limit Hold'em. There are many mistakes that you can make, but also many ways that you can force your opponent into mistakes.

Whenever you find yourself in such a spot, you have to ask yourself: "How did I get here in the first place?"

If you have the initiative on the turn, the most likely case is that you were the pre-flop aggressor. However, various scenarios are possible here:

  • You are the PFA, conti-bet on the flop and could fire a 2nd barrel now.
  • You are the PFA, checked behind on the flop and could make the first bet now.
  • You are not the PFA, but bet on the flop after your opponent checked.
