How to exploit cash game regulars
Raise Your Edge founder bencb has two tips to help you print money against bad regulars in your online cash game sessions.
Have you ever played with an opponent at the tables who was clearly a recreational player, but you couldn’t quite figure out how to exploit them?
While there is more information available in poker than ever before, low stakes cash games are still filled with recreational players making huge mistakes. No matter where you are in the world, if you sit down at your local $1/$2 table you will always find players with massive leaks in their game that you can exploit.
Here we’ll look at a couple of things you can do to exploit the most common mistakes these recreational players make.
Fold More to 3-bets Preflop
One common trend that has stood the test of time at low stakes is that players never bluff 3-bet enough. Usually when a player decides to 3-bet instead of call they have a range of TT+, AK a lot of the time. Some recreational players won’t even 3-bet AK, TT or even JJ!
Because of our opponent’s strong range we have to start letting go of speculative hands like 97s, 54s and low pocket pairs like 55 preflop. Usually with these speculative hands you’ll be put in a tough situation postflop versus an opponent with a strong range who can bet you off of your equity.
Call hands like KJs, KQs, AQs and 88+ that have better playability postflop (against super tight players 3-betting you can even let these go and just continue when you have a monster hand).
Tight is right when facing a 3-bet preflop!
C-bet More Postflop
A Continuation Bet (or C-bet) refers to a bet made on the flop by the same player who raised preflop.
Say we have 8♠ 7♦, raise in the Small Blind, and get called by the Big Blind. The flop is A♦ K♥ 5♠.
What should we do?
The answer is C-bet! The Big Blind will have absolutely nothing on this board a lot of the time, and we have a great opportunity to push better hands out of the pot due to the scary nature of this flop.
The same is true for dry, disconnected flops like J72, Q52, K83, et cetera. Just bet small and force out all of the garbage holdings the Big Blind can have.
When facing recreational players (unless you’re up against a whale/maniac who plays crazy), you’ll want to fold more preflop when they are aggressive and bet more postflop when they are passive and show weakness.
You can implement this strategy right away by creating some defending ranges versus recreational 3-bets at 100bb, and thinking about what boards will be close to 100% c-bets versus recreationals for you.
