We caught up with Bogdan to find out a bit more about him, what we can expect from him in future, and picked up some tips on the way. You can take a look at the interview below:
PokerStrategy.com: Hello, BogdanPS. It would be great if you could introduce yourself briefly to our members.
bogdanps: Hello everyone. I’m a 27 year old poker player and coach from Canada. I was born in Romania and moved with my family here about 10 years ago. I finished university a few years back with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.
PokerStrategy.com: Since when has poker been a part of your life and what does it mean to you?
bogdanps: I’ve been playing draw poker since I was very little, however I was only introduced to Hold’em around 2002. Poker was a relatively small hobby until early 2008 when I started to venture online. By the summer of 2008 I was already beginning to take poker more seriously.
I’ve always thought of poker as a side business that could potentially get big and become a main business. I believe what kept me interested in the game was the challenge I always faced when playing and of course the possible monetary rewards. As I became a better player I realised that the learning curve never ends and it’s a continuous challenge.
PokerStrategy.com: Could you please tell us a bit more about your poker career to date?
bogdanps: When I started playing online I was no different than most new players. I deposited $100 on Party Poker and without proper bankroll management and ideas about the game I went busto relatively fast.
At that time I was playing anything from games with $10 buyin to $100 buy-in and tournaments. I decided that I need to take the game a bit more seriously if I were to get any enjoyment (and profit) out of it. At that time I decided to deposit $400 on PokerStars and play NL 10 (a mixture of 6-max and FR). I started improving slowly by reading several books and playing in-between job searches and other activities.
As I was building up my bankroll and knowledge of the game I was playing a mixture of NL 25 and NL 50. During this time I realised how important table selection was and started improving in that area. In early 2009 I started to have more time for poker and started making more serious progress. During this time I was spending roughly two hours a day studying the game (mostly reviewing my own hands in HEM, running stove calculations, etc.) on top of a couple of hours of playing.
In early 2010 I made the transition into the higher games and I was playing mostly NL 100 and NL 200 with the occasional NL 400 employing a very strict playing, studying and table selection routine. My main goal, as a poker player and business owner, is to make the most profitable decision for the short and long term.
PokerStrategy.com: Could you please tell us a bit more about your (poker) coaching career to date?
bogdanps: I started helping out other people with poker (or free coaching) in early 2009. At that time I was helping the really low micro stakes players. Since then I’ve coached over 100 players ranging from NL 2 to NL 200.
As a poker coach my main goal is to equip you with the tools necessary for improving your game and moving up (and staying in) the limits. My goals are to get you to become a better thinker at the table and outside of it, get yourself better organised and get you to have a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the game.
Poker is a game that changes very fast, especially online where there’s so much information available, and thus having the ability to adjust to an ever-changing ecosystem is far superior to anything else. I emphasise student-coach interaction a lot and I try to get my students involved as much as possible by presenting them with questions and exercises during and after the session. I also create curriculums for my students where each session could be pre-arranged with a certain topic as the main focus of the discussions.
PokerStrategy.com: What can the PokerStrategists expect from your videos? What limits will they see?
bogdanps: My first video series will be theory based and we’ll explore the topic of bet-sizing in short handed NLHE on a detailed level. The series will have six episodes. Two of the episodes will be dedicated to answering questions (previously asked in a video or found on the forums). The other four will be power point presentations that will include exercises, questions and examples.
My goal is to get each and one of you involved and engaged in my videos.
In the future I plan to make lots of coaching videos with members of the PokerStrategy community that will include database reviews, hand history reviews, video reviews, etc. I also plan to continue making theory videos and live play videos. Based on the audiences demand you could see videos from anything from NL 10 to NL 200 shorthanded (at first, most likely in the middle at NL 50-100).
PokerStrategy.com: Are you planning on getting involved in any other way?
bogdanps: I plan on being active in the forums and judging hands for gold level and below. I also plan on helping out the Romanian community with videos and forum posts. I am also hoping to do some private 1-on-1 coaching and group coaching with fellow PokerStrategy members.
PokerStrategy.com: Are there any tips you would like to give our PokerStrategists? What do you think is particularly important to becoming a better poker player?
bogdanps: The best tip I can give you right now is to make sure you always study and review your game. Open up your tracking software and review hands that you have played earlier in spare moments. I’d recommend you study your own game at least 30 to 60 minutes each day that you play.
I’d also recommend that you start working on your mental game very early in your poker career. The mental game is as important as your poker game, if not more. Keep in mind that there are no replacements for hard work and discipline. Without either, your chances of success are very small.
