Few books in poker can claim to be timeless, but the Harrington on Hold'em series is not only perhaps the most influential poker book in the last ten years, it is also as relevant today as it was when it was released. When 1995 world champion Dan Harrington managed to make the final table of the main event in both 2003 and 2004, many pundits considered it one of the greatest achievements in post-boom history.
So naturally a book documenting his tournament strategy was always going to be well received. Such was the depth of Harrington's tournament expertise, he simply could not get it all into one book, and thus the three part Harrington on Hold'em series was born. Volume 1 focussed on strategic play, in particular for the early stages of the tournament.
The first volume concentrated on some of the key strategic decisions in no limit hold'em tournaments, including playing styles, pot odds, pre flop play, post flop play, and turn and river play. The book is dense with example hands which invite the reader to put themselves in the shoes of the player, as well as real life examples from the WSOP main event.
Nobody before had broken tournament poker down into this much detail, and the beauty of this book (and the series as a whole) is just how many practical examples the reader has in front of him. This may sound like a potentially complex title, but with the use of simple table diagrams and superb analysis from Harrington, what really is striking about this book is just how straightforward and easy to understand it is.
All three Harrington on Hold'em books really are must-own titles for anyone who takes tournament poker seriously, and Volume 1 Strategic Play is the obvious place to start.
