According to PokerStrategy coach AaronLambert you should consider the tournament format before you start. Establishing how many prizes are available, the number of runners and the structure of the tournament should guide your overall strategy.
His first tip for satellite success that that you should assess the size of the field versus the number of seats on offer. Knowing this will help you decide how fast or slow you need to play in the early stages. When the proportion of seats on offer is high then you should enter survival mode sooner.
In contrast, if around 10% of the field will make the payouts, then you need to play aggressively for a longer period until the field thins and your stack is healthy.
Opening Aggression: Aggression is a key factor in the early stages of a satellite tournament because you need to get chips early in order to sit tight later on. This may seem counter intuitive to regular tournament players, but it's the most effective strategy. To help make this concept stick it's helpful to take your normal MTT strategy and reverse it in your mind.
Fold Equity Increase: One thing you'll notice throughout the early stages of a satellite is that you have more fold equity than normal. This is because a lot of players will be stuck in standard MTT mode and will be playing tight. When this is the case you can chip up fairly comfortably before sitting back when the bubble nears. Having said this, you need to always aim to maintain a threatening stack throughout the tournament.
Coasters and Gamblers: Recognising the players that are comfortable enough to coast into the money can present a lot of opportunities for you to make extra chips. Because you have more fold equity against these players you can shove relatively wide and expect them to fold. In contrast, make sure you know which players need to gamble. This dynamic will become more pronounced the closer the bubble gets. When this happens simply tighten up and let your stack carry you across the finish line.
