Chris Moneymaker dominates the Play Money rankings
The most iconic name in real money poker is also becoming known for his skills with the free currency version of the game.
Yet another high profile poker player has been revealed to be crushing Play Money games. The man who started the boom, 2003 World Champion Chris Moneymaker, is one of the biggest Play Money winners of all time on PokerStars.
Under the screename 'Money800' he was on top of the rankings with 15,412,744,041 Play Money chips, but has recently been pushed to second by 'Dash_Lane' who currently boasts 17,603,388,798.
If you were to buy Moneymaker's Play Money bankroll on PokerStars, the going rate would cost you somewhere in the region of $20,000.
The best players at free money stakes
Moneymaker is not the only notable player to crush Play Money. Last year we brought you the news that Barry Greenstein won the Sunday Billion (The Play Money version of the Sunday Million) twice in five weeks.
It may seem strange that two notable poker players would spend so much time in free money games, but it actually makes perfect sense. Greenstein and Moneymaker are two of the few remaining American Team PokerStars Pros and part of their commitment involves a certain amount of playing time on the site.
Unlike players like Jason Somerville and Isaac Haxton, they do not travel as much outside of the USA to grind online. As such the only games available to them most of the time would be Play Money.
Given the massive skill gulf between Play Money and even the micro stakes, it stands to reason that Greenstein and Moneymaker are probably the most skilled players playing the free money version of the game consistently on PokerStars.
