Daily Rewind - Confusion at WPT, Eva Longoria's Poker Event, NYC Club Shutdown

In today's daily round-up we recap the latest news from the WPT, look at why a New York poker club was forced to shut and get charitable with Eva Longoria and Phil Hellmuth.

Bubble Confusion at WPT Foxwoods

As the end of play neared at the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods the already tense atmosphere - thanks to the impending bubble - took an upswing as a dispute over when play should end consumed the field.

With 30 players left, but only 27 getting paid, the tournament director asked the players if they would like to play past the scheduled day's end in order to burst the bubble. All but one of the players, Thomas Schreiber, agreed meaning that because the decision wasn't unanimous the end of play would stay as originally planned.

However, a series of fateful twists left the field balanced on 28 players meaning that, despite their announcement of only four hands left to play, the staff once again surveyed the remaining players before the decision was taken to play until 27 remained.

Soon after Alistair Melville hit the rail one spot shy of the money and the day's sessions came to an end. The pros were far from happy with the confusion the incident had caused, though. A series of tweets from the likes of Matt Glantz who wrote: "Foxwoods. You just don't get it! And when I say it, I mean everything," summed up the feeling from the pros.

Eva Longoria's Poker Night

Take a dash of celebrity, mix in a pinch of poker and serve with a generous helping of, well, generosity. Poker players may spend their time working out the best way to relieve their opponents of their money, but the world's top pros also have a benevolent side.

Last night Hollywood starlet Eva Longoria hosted her annual celebrity poker tournament in aid of Eva's Heroes, a charity which helps developmentally challenged children and young adults. The event, which was sponsored by Xbox, was held at Airstar Private Hanger and featured some of the poker world's biggest names, including Phil Hellmuth.

One other notable guest was Lucas Davis and his pet llama Chocolatte. Despite not having an invite the poker enthusiast decided to try and bluff his way in by using his llama as a distraction.

First Amendment Doesn't Protect Poker Club

A New York poker club has been forced to close its doors following a ruling by the courts. The poker club had its appeal that it should be protected under the First Amendment law rejected by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

AK Tournament Play, located in Wallkill, New York, opened in 2007 but found opposition from the local community almost instantly. At its peak the club attracted 130 poker playing members, but as the pressure from the community increased numbers dwindled until eventually the law moved to close it down. Lawyers for the poker club argued that members should qualify for at least minimal First Amendment activity.

However, the court disagreed, stating: "Even assuming that there might be some circumstances under which a poker club's activities could involve sufficiently expressive or political content to merit protection under the First Amendment, the plaintiff's vague complaint fails to set out facts from which a court could draw that conclusion here."

High Stakes Corner

It was a day of heavy action at the nosebleed tables yesterday as "V.Wahlbeck" and "VietRussian" crushed the games raking in $162,953 and $121,216 respectively. It took Ville Wahlbeck just 1,603 hands to become the biggest winner of the day, whereas "VietRussian" had to grind out his profit over 3,937 hands. Also running well yesterday was Phil "MrSweets28" Galfond who scooped $79,122.

At the other end of spectrum it was a brutal day for "!P0krparty¡" as the virtual poker player lost $324,347 over the course of 9,684 hands. Also incurring a sizeable dent to their bankroll for $100,000 was "refaelamit". The quickest losses of the day, though, went to "1Il|1Il|1il|" who lost over $53,000 in just 319 hands and "j4kerstar" who lost over $25,000 in only 87 hands.
