World Series Update

@WhoJedi catches Gus asleep during $50k event

Only one bracelet was decided at the Rio today after Oleksii Kovalchuk took down the $2,500 Omaha/Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo event. The Ukrainian player’s win signalled the country’s first WSOP title of 2012 and earned him $228,014.

The man who finished a credible second behind Kovalchuk was  georgedanzer. The German pro couldn’t find enough momentum to take down his first WSOP bracelet but still took home $140,825 for his efforts.

Also running well in the tournament but just missing out on a victory was WSOP broadcaster Norman Chad. The ex-wife hating commentator fished sixth for $36,093, which is his biggest tournament cash ever.

With 41 events completed it’s all change at the top of the WSOP POY leaderboard as John Monnette has made way for Phil Ivey.

The American has now made five final tables and, despite not winning another bracelet, has still managed to accumulate 539.70 points.

Negreanu’s Impromptu Rant

Since starting the fight for another WSOP bracelet Daniel Negreanu hasn’t had much spare time on his hands, which has meant we’ve been denied a full-blown Weekly Rant.

While he’s managed to produce two short video updates over the last couple of weeks, we haven’t been treated to an extended insight into what he really thinks about certain people in the poker world.

However, thanks to QuadJacks, that problem has been solved as Daniel sat down Marco before the $50k H.O.R.S.E. event to get a few things off his chest.

US vs. UK in Noise Wars

Rowdy rails have become a common occurrence over the last few years at the WSOP, with UK’s finest usually leading the way.

Indeed, whenever a British player makes a final table the atmosphere in the Rio usually transforms from a trickle of riffling chips to a wave of football-style chants and cheers.

Not everyone seems to have taken kindly to their enthusiastic support though. Two players in particular, Justin Bonomo and Brian Hastings, have taken the biggest disliking to the British rails, airing their grievances via Twitter.

Hastings isn't happy

The pair’s reaction has been met with contempt from a few British players, sparking what could turn into a vocal war between the two nations.

Indeed, PKR’s Scott Shelley has stressed that he’ll be actively rooting against the pair if they should make a final table.

Are rowdy rails good for the game or are they inconsiderate to the rest of the players?

High Stakes Corner

“EireAbu” took the virtual felts by storm yesterday, racking up a profit of $103,517 in just 762 hands.

The mystery player’s haul was enough to put them well ahead of the day’s second biggest winner, “Phisherman36”, who banked $85,978.

In contrast, Ilari “Ilari FIN” Sahamies winning ways came to an end yesterday thanks to $71,667 losing session. It took the Finnish player just 405 hands to erase some of his earlier profits.

Short bursts of negative variance also plagued Rui “PepperoniF” Cao yesterday as the Canadian played just 247 hands before ending his session $70,284 down.
