Darren Elias makes history with third WPT win

Elias takes down the Fallsview Poker Classic in Canada and joins a prestigious club in the process.

American Darren Elias overcame a field of 489 players to win a historic third WPT title last week, writing his name in the history books at the same time.

Elias was playing at Canada’s Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort when he claimed the Fallsview Poker Classic, making a payday of $335,436, his second best ever.

In doing so he moves into second place in the WPT Player of the Year standings, one place behind Ben Zamani. More importantly though, Elias will join Gus Hansen, Carlos Mortensen, Anthony Zinno and Chino Rheem as one of a select few of three-time winners on the WPT.

The other two wins in his hat-trick of WPT Main Event titles came in back to back victories, something only two others have managed. In late 2014 he won the $3,500 WPT Borgata Championship for $843,744 which was immediately followed up with success in the $3,500 WPT St. Maarten for a further $127,680.

Elias, who has live career earnings of $4,474,155, told reporters after his win; “It was a good tournament. I got dealt a lot of good hands in this one, a lot of big preflop hands. I kept getting aces and kings, I got pretty lucky to win. I was smooth sailing most of the way.”
