Malware warning at PokerStars and Full Tilt
Players at both sites have been warned to be vigilant after becoming the target of a spyware programme called Odlanor.
According to software security company ESET, the malware presents itself as benign installers for programmes like Daemon Tools or mTorrent, or in other cases is loaded onto computers via poker-related software like Tournament Shark, Poker Calculator Pro, Smart Buddy or Poker Office.
The malware alerts the fraudsters when a player is playing on PokerStars and Full Tilt, allowing them to search for them and join them at the tables. It then takes and sends a screenshot from the player's PC, which gives the hackers access to hole card and even login information.
The malware has been present since April and most victims have been in Eastern Europe, particularly Russia and Ukraine.
Statement from PokerStars
PokerStrategy.com received the following statement from PokerStars:
“PokerStars and Full Tilt are aware that some players’ computers have been targeted by malicious software. An initial review of gameplay for those accounts where we believe this malware was present found no evidence that these players have lost funds due to unfair play. In line with our constant goal for utmost security, we recommend that players protect themselves against this sort of attack by practicing good computer security.Players should keep their operating system updated, use reliable anti-virus software, and only install software from reputable sources.”
