Neteller & Skrill accounts hacked
Paysafe Group has confirmed the breach in 2009 and 2010.
Account details were illegally acquired from 3.6 million Neteller accounts in 2009 and 4.2 million Skrill accounts in 2010. Only 2% of the accounts affected have been active in the last seven months and the group believes no further cyber-attacks have been made since 2010.
The data obtained did not include passwords, card data or bank account information. The company is confident that the data acquired would not enable hackers to access customer accounts.
Paysafe Group became aware of 1,500 accounts that may have been compromised and immediately took steps to restore the accounts and reimburse them for lost funds.
Security has been improved
Earlier this year Paysafe Group, formerly known as Optimal Payments, the parent of Neteller, bought Skrill for €1.1 billion.
In a press release, the group confirmed their security has been improved significantly since the breaches in 2009 and 2010:
The Group’s executive management team, IT leadership and security protocols and standards have changed considerably since the breaches more than five years ago. The significant investment made to cybersecurity in recent years will continue into the future as Paysafe works to ensure it has the appropriate systems in place to defend against cybersecurity threats.
