The durrrr Challenge might restart in 2017
In what could be the most unlikely story of the year, there is a chance that the durrrrr Challenge between Daniel Cates and Tom Dwan could resume.
The infamous heads-up challenge saw Tom Dwan offer to play anybody (except Phil Galfond) over 50,000 hands across four tables of $200/$400 No Limit and/or PLO, with Dwan offering $1.5 million to the $500k of his opponent he would be up at the end of it.
His two challenges, against Daniel Cates and Patrik Antonius, came to a halt after Black Friday and to a complete standstill in 2013. Dwan is losing to Cates by $1,251,059.00 with 30,665 hands remaining and currently leads Antonius by $2,059,719.50 with 10,564 hands remaining.
Since then there have been glimmers of hope it could restart but for the most part it has been frustration on Cates's part, he even went as far as to call Dwan out about it.
Hope for 2017?
There now seems to be renewed hope that it could be back on. Fellow high stakes star Doug Polk took to his Twitter account to remind everybody that he thought the whole thing was a scam, but Cates was quick to point out he and Dwan have been in talks to restart the matches.
Given Cates has been told by Dwan the challenge would restart, only for it not to, in the past, this might seem like wishful thinking. However Dwan has recently appeared in a series of training videos with Paul Phau after otherwise staying under the radar, which suggests perhaps he is ready to become a public figure in poker again. Resuming these infamous challenges would be a good start.
