Travelling South America playing underground poker
Read about the two-year journey of 'natanoj', who travelled through South America on a motorbike playing underground poker games.
With so many major events on the poker circuit, most poker players are used to travelling. However, that usually involves budget airlines, cheap hotels and rarely venturing outside of the casino.
Two years ago PokerStrategist natanoj of France embarked on an epic adventure. He quit his job in architecture and flew to South America, trying to find poker games along the way.
That is easier said than done in some parts of the world, and he found himself playing in a lot of private poker games you don't hear about. Some of the games were in illegal underground gambling dens and sometimes they didn't want to let him leave with his winnings.
He has blogged about this on his PokerStrategy.com blog, as well as documented the journey on his own website and social media. Many of his stories are much more reminiscent of the old school road gambler tales of Doyle Brunson and Amarillo Slim, than the global industry poker is today.
natanoj bought a motorbike and travelled from town-to-town, country-to-country, and settled down wherever the people were cool. He also fell in love with a girl and did so much more than just play cards.
After over two years the journey has concluded in Las Vegas, where he has just bust from the Main Event. It doesn't look like his is returning to his old job any time soon, in fact he has got himself a book deal in France to share his journey.
