WSOP Event #18: Daniel Alaei Wins His Second Gold Bracelet

The remaining 18 players in the $10,000 PLO Hi/Lo event returned for
the third and also the final play day to determine who would get the
bracelet and in prize money. John Monnette was in the chip lead, over
500,000 chips away from his nearest challenger Ben Boyd.

However, with
Daniel Negreanu, Annie Duke, Alex Kravchenko and some more notable
names still in the race, even the chip leader couldn't say he had a
secured seat at the final table.

It didn't take long for the
field to come down to the final nine players. Cameron McKinley was
busted as the final table boy, leaving Negreanu, Daniel Alaei and
others to take their seats at the final table. Scott Clements entered
the final table in the chip lead while Yueqi Zhu held the shortest
stack, hence it came as no surprise when Zhu left the table first.

Annie Duke was sent to the rail next. She opened the hand with a raise,
Greg Jamison moved all-in, John Monnette called and Duke also went
all-in. Jamison turned over , Monnette showed and Duke revealed . The board came
which gave Monnette the high pot and Jamison the low pot, while Duke
had to walk away with applause from the audience offering her some
comfort.

Tom Koral packed his bags in 7th place and Greg Jamison hit the rail
shortly after in 6th place. Some controversy occurred before the next
bust out. Scott Clements and John Monnette were in the middle of a hand
on the flop which contained two nines. Monnette picked up his last pink
chip and Clements tabled his hand, since he assumed Monnette was
all-in.

Clements' hand had a third nine and when Monnette saw that he
was drawing to runne-runner, he quickly folded and saved his last 5,000
chip. Negreanu wasn't pleased with this, as Clemenets potentially cost
him a position, as Negreanu was short stacked himself. In the end, the
floor was called over and it was ruled that Clements had to serve a
full one-orbit penalty for intentionally exposing his cards.

Monnette was out not long after this hand, ending his run in 5th place.
Daniel Negreanu was busted in 4th place after an encounter with Scott
Clements. This was another successful tournament for Negreanu which
earned him $130,401 for the efforts. It didn't take long for the final table to reach heads-up play, with Ben Boyd leaving in 3rd place, the race for the title came down to Scott Clements and Daniel Alaei.

It only took two hands of heads-up play to determine the winner. Clements raised, Alaei three-bet, Clements four-bet and Alaei called, turning over while Clements revealed . The board came and it was all over for Clements who played great for the past three days, but not great enough to take down Alaei. Daniel Alaei won $445,898 for his efforts, along with his second gold bracelet.
