WSOP Event #41: Shootout Gone Wrong For Nazgul And Others

The
Shootout format seems to be one of the most interesting ones on the WSOP schedule, especially if it's a $5,000 NLHE. Three Team Pokerstrategy.com players were registered for the tournament, while the fourth player on the team, Trader, was still playing the big $10,000 PLO Event #40!

The field was relatively small for a World Series tournament with only
280 players in total, and most of them were late, so the game had to start
later. In this format, the table draw is very important, as only one
player will qualify at each table for round two, thus reaching the
money. Pokernoob’s table featured the Limit cash-game specialist Jennifer Harman. "She is not really a No Limit specialist, I think", told us Pokernoob, "but she really had a good run at the table."
pokernoob falls short on day 1
Pokernoob's (pictured left) first big hand was 
offsuit. He flat called a bet from the button, and the board came 
with two spades. Original raiser bet, and Pokernoob called again. The turn brought 
,Pokernoob bet and his opponent called. The river came 
, and Pokernoob made a small value-bet. He got called by 
and was left with only 6,000 chips…
On blinds 150-300/ ante 25, David Singer raised to 800, Pokernoob
re-raised to 2,800 on the BB with 
. The reason for that was that it was the last hand before the break and many players were getting up already. Pokernoob had been playing tight, so David Singer who was most likely was trying to make a steal, had to fold a major part of his range.
Few hands later, in the same level, MP2 raised to 800, got called by MP3 and Harman called on the button. Pokernoob was in the BB again, and pushed all-in for 8,000 chips with pocket fives.
Everyone folded and Pokernoob climbed up to over 10,000 in chips !
However, Pokernoob was the first of the Team's players to bust, with a
pair of sixes running into a pair of nines, after three levels of play.
On his last hand, in level 200-400/ante 50, one loose-aggressive player
opened for 1,050 from MP1, Jeniffer Harman made the call from the HiJack.
Pokernoob had 
this time, and decided to move all-in from the button. "It’s
a standard move at that level, I had to take my chance, especially
because Harman folded a lot pre-flop after a re-raise. In this kind of
winner-take-all format, you have to be aggressive, otherwise, you’ll
never win it. But really though, even if you don;t have to play aggressive, with these blinds and antes this is a really standard move to make with pocket sixes" First player folded but after three minutes tanking,
the high stakes player Harman called with pocket nines and eliminated
Pokernoob.
Nazgul (pictured right) had a bad table draw: "Unlike the other shootout, it’s not fishy at all!", he told us with a big smile. "Even one PokerStrategy member, ragen, is there, next to Barney Boatman and other big internet players."
After being pretty card-dead, he had to make a big move in Level 4, with 
. " I raised it preflop from the button and ragen calls me from the SB. I had about 25 bb left and he had me covered. The flop comes 
with flush draw, Ragen donks into me and I flatcall,
so that I can catch him making a move if he misses flush or something
like that. On the turn, a blank came and he bets I reraise and he goes all in. I really think I have to call here with a short stack like this. Especially in a shoot out tournament. I still wonder if I could get away from the hand. Unfortunately, Ragen had 
and I was dead to two outs…"
Allanon had pretty much the same destiny, never catching good cards
or chipping up. For once, he did not lose his tournament life versus
Aces, but this time, with versus Queens, pretty much drawing dead… He too had a strong table,
with former WSOP champion Chris Ferguson, Peter Eastage and online
superstar Hevad Khan : "I could not find any spot in fact. Once I
had Kings and everyone folded, and when I wanted to make moves, I
always got re-raised. I even had to fold Jacks before the pause, after
raise, re-raise, re-raise… I guess I did not have the right timing today…"
qualifying for Day 2. First one of those is Phil Ivey, who literally
crushed his table, very quietly, as usual. Joe Serock will also return for Day 2, after having eliminated 2008 Main Event runner-up Ivan
Demidov. Phil Hellmuth almost succeeded in signing his fourth cash this
year, but fell in second place against Andrea Bennelli (
vs. 
).Jennifer Harman won her table very quickly, after Pokernoob's
elimination, she had a huge chiplead against her remaining opponents.
