English Community Round-up
Welcome to the news round-up for the English Community. Each week, we will keep you in touch with some of the most important threads within the forum together with some of the fun posts, so that you never need to miss them.
Our
Community round-up is your weekly source for all that happens inside
the PokerStrategy forums. If you missed something last week and you
still want to be in touch with our community, here are some of the most
important posts. This is just one of many community-related projects
being set up.
Blog of the week this week is DaPhunks Extreme Skiing/Poker blog.
Community member daphunk first started this blog in September last year, but I for one, can highly recommend reading all 15 pages worth.
A very poular member, this blog charts every step along the poker journey as well as some off piste moments of course as the title would suggest.
A great read, keep up the good work daphunk.
Ok, I'm cheating a little bit this week as this quote was actually made in the forum last week, but thought it was still worth sharing with you in case you missed it. 🙂
: I'm greater than Chuck Norris.
Quite a statement and furthermore it's actually true, has provided photographic proof of it in this thread.
Community member thebrood has been very active in the sample hands forum this week, helping both his own game and other members by posting lots of different scenario's.
This is one from the Sample Hands BSS - NL20 to NL50 (as of Silver Status) board:
0.1/0.2 No-Limit Hold'em (9 handed)
Hand recorder used for this poker hand: PokerStrategy Elephant 0.67 by www.pokerstrategy.com.
Preflop: Hero is UTG2 with Q
, Q
UTG1 folds, Hero raises to $0.80, MP1 folds, MP2 calls $0.80, 5 folds.
Flop: ($1.90) 6
, 9
, J
(2 players)
Hero bets $1.60, MP2 calls $1.60.
Turn: ($5.10) A
(2 players)

River: ($13.10) 7
(2 players)
Hero checks, MP2 bets $6.80, Hero calls $6.80.
Final Pot: $26.70
thebrood suggests that both the flop & turn look like the opponent is on a draw.
This view is supported by other community members. Community member nttflox also suggests the following which is a view agreed with by Judge
veriz.
"I like your line on turn. The ace is a good card to second barrel. But
I would probably fold the river. It looks like a value bet."
Members helping members, it's just one of the many great things about our community. Second opinions are always useful when fine tuning your poker game and we have many sample hand boards ranging from Bronze status upwards, so why not post a few hands today.
A big warm welcome to all new community members this week.
Included amongst them is randomly chosen new community member of the
week piebehutkak who joined us on the 13th of May and is from the Netherlands. Welcome, it's good to see you all.
We wish all our new community members every success and enjoyment with
your poker and look forward to seeing you active in the forums soon.
Don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have and/or share your poker experiences, our community members are really keen to help fellow poker players wherever they can.
Our community amassed winnings of $ 11,669.71 this week.
Congratulations to all our winners/other performances, which included:
- zenith88 followed up last weeks big tourney win with another, this time winning $10,500 in a $50k Guaranteed tournament. Wow, keep it going;
- vladoo101 recorded his first tournament win, many congrats;
- Final table finishes for both sup22 & wasy8, very nice, well played;
- Multiple cashes for alejandrosh & cojo013, sweet, congrats.
Sorry I cannot name everyone each week, but I'll try to pick up a
selection of different people each time. Keep posting those wins in this thread, we're still short of our $1,000,000 target, with a current total of $389,129.51.
spotlight on
Whilst men probably dominate television coverage of Poker, many women too enjoy and are successful at the game. This week we've been in touch with one of our many female members.
Spotlight this week on community member kay639.
PokerStrategy: Hi kay639 welcome and thanks for agreeing to an interview for the community.
kay639: Hi, it's ok, thanks for asking me.
PokerStrategy: Tell us a little bit about yourself
kay639: My name's Kayleigh, I'm 20 years old, I live in England. I've got 2 girls, Brooke and Sophie and I'm engaged to gaz639, who also plays poker and a PokerStrategy member.
PokerStrategy: Is there a story behind the nickname, does it have any special meaning?
kay639: Not really, Kay is obviously from my name and the 639 bit is just what I copied from Gaz.
PokerStrategy: How long have you been playing poker?
kay639: I've been playing it for about 1 and a half years now, i think. I was always curious how to play it when I was younger at school but never had the patience to let my friends teach me, then I met Gaz, he showed me how and I've been hooked since.
PokerStrategy: How would you describe your poker style?
kay639: TAG, but I have a bad habit for loosening up when I'm bored (normally get my double ups then 🙂 ).
PokerStrategy: Which variants are you currently playing and at what levels?
kay639: At the minute I'm doing $1 MTT's on PokerStars.
PokerStrategy: Whilst your obviously too modest to say so yourself, you have been doing very well recently, consistently reaching the money on a regular basis I understand. Many congratulations, keep up the good work. Do you ever play any live events, or are you mainly online based?
kay639: I don't play any live events, I would give away what cards I have too easily so it's safer for me to stay at home and play.
PokerStrategy: If you had to have a theme tune to enter a poker tournament to (like boxers when they enter the ring), what would it be?
kay639: Thats a tough un, it would probably have to be Simply The Best by Tina Turner, the words speak for themselves.
PokerStrategy: Nice choice 🙂 Who is your favourite poker pro?
kay639: I think Phil Hellmuth is probably my favourite just because of the stupid hands he plays, reminds me of me 🙂
PokerStrategy: lol I think we all do at times 🙂 What has been your biggest success/achievement in poker so far?
kay639: I haven't really had any major successes to be honest, a few $100+ wins in tourneys but thats all.
PokerStrategy: If you had the opportunity of playing a final table with a selection of people of your choice, who would be seated there with you?
kay639: hmmm... Probably some of the Sheffield United Football team because they don't need all the money they get paid and should share it with me lol
PokerStrategy: lol Nice. What do you like most about PokerStrategy?
kay639: The articles and all the friendly people that are here.
PokerStrategy: Is there anyone in particular from the community you'd like to give a shout out to?
kay639: Gaz, It's his 23rd Birthday tomorrow (16th May) so Happy Birthday 🙂
PokerStrategy: Yes of course, happy birthday gaz639 from all of us at PokerStrategy, members & staff.
Do you have any hobbies outside of poker?
kay639: I don't really, my life is pretty much full with my 2 girls, they're hard work lol, but I enjoy going to the pub when i get chance.
PokerStrategy: If you were able to have 3x wishes (Harry Potter style), what would you ask for?
kay639:
1. That my girls would stay healthy and strong all their lives;
2. Win the lottery;
3. Get a Mitsibishi Lancer Evolution 10, even though I can't drive but Gaz can lol.
PokerStrategy: Hmmm would be nice to be chauffeured though 🙂
Well thank you for doing this interview kay639, you've given us all a great insight into the person behind the nickname and we're very grateful for you taking the time out to talk to us today. We wish you continued success with your poker and look forward to seeing you in the forum and on the green felt soon.
kay639: Thank You, I've enjoyed doing it, see you all in the forums.
Would you like to appear yourself one week or maybe you'd like to
nominate a fellow member who you would like to know more about? Drop me
a reply in the feedback thread and maybe your wish will come true 🙂
Resident caption contest guru thebrood found time between posting sample hands to provide us all with another fun photo to try to think of a funny caption for. Post your captions in this thread.

As always, this is your Community page and whilst I try to browse most
forum threads looking for points of interest, it's of course not
possible to cover everything. So go on, drop me some suggestions and/or
your thoughts on what you would like to appear in this Round-up news
item in the following feedback thread.
