English Community Round-up

Welcome to the news round-up for the English Community. Each week, we will keep you in touch with some of the most important threads within the forum together with some of the fun posts, so that you never need to miss them.

Our
Community round-up is your weekly source for all that happens inside
the PokerStrategy forums. If you missed something last week and you
still want to be in touch with our community, here are some of the most
important posts. This is just one of many community-related projects
being set up.

Poker Blog of the week

Here in the Community Round-up, I like to include blogs from both new members and our more established members in equal measure. This week, I've gone for one of the latter of these and they don't come much more established than community member opal99.

Opal's scale to success

You will no doubt be aware that opal99 has been grinding hard recently and has taken the PokerStrategy Top250 promotion by storm over the last couple of months, not only finishing top of the English community, but also cashing well in the overall (global) standings. All this poker has set opal99 well on course to achieve his dream of becoming a PokerStrategy Black Member sometime soon in the future. We all wish him continued success and best regards in his quest.

sample hand of the week

This week, our sample hand is taken from the Fixed Limit board and involves a tricky decision I'm sure we've all encountered at one time or other.

Hero: $15.85

MP1: $12.50

MP3: $6.03

0.25/0.5 Fixed-Limit Hold'em (9 handed)
Hand recorder used for this poker hand: PokerStrategy Elephant 0.67 by www.pokerstrategy.com.

Preflop: Hero is UTG1 with 9Diamond
, 9Spade
. MP1 posts a blind of $0.25.
Hero raises, 3 folds, MP3 calls, 4 folds.

Flop: (6.40 SB) TSpade
, 3Diamond
, JClub
(2 players)
Hero bets, MP3 calls.

Turn: (4.20 BB) QClub
(2 players)
Hero bets, MP3 raises, Hero folds.

Final Pot: 7.20 BB

Community member delete461 asks for a second opinion on whether it's worth calling on the turn with an OESD (Open Ended Straight Draw) as some of the cards that would help him would most likely also help the opponent.

Judge Primzi recommends the following:
"You have 3 outs for your 8's here (discount one because of the flush
draw), up to 1 out for the 9 and up to 3 outs for the Q. So you're
getting max. 7 outs here, but I'd discount at least 1 more because you
might not have the nut straight even if you hit, so you need 1:6.8 to
call with 6 outs, which you're getting. So it's a thin call on the turn
and re-evaluate on the river."

Are you unsure of the correct action on a hand and want a second opinion from one of our judges together with other experienced members views, post a hand in the Sample Hands Boards today.

Have you recently achieved a landmark even that you would like to share with the community, use the feedback thread at the bottom of the page.

spotlight on

The Spotlight is taking a week off and will return soon.

Special "Meet the Mods (Moderators)" interviews will also be taking place shortly and who knows, maybe even the Community Managers too. If you have a question you'd like put to the Mods or Rockers.... er I mean Head Admins, drop a reply on the feedback thread or send me a Community mailbox message.

Would you like to be interviewed yourself one week or maybe you'd like to
nominate a fellow member who you would like to know more about? Drop me
a reply in the feedback thread and maybe your wish will come true.

  and finally

The thread that caught my eye this week is again from the Fun & Off-Topic board and was created by community member mishuq.

Smokers' lounge includes some of those awkward and/or embarrassing moments that members have had whilst smoking. Remember folks, smoking is bad for you and will seriously affect your health. Reading this thread however will just cause your sides to split, which probably isn't as bad.

As always, this is your Community page and whilst I try to browse most
forum threads looking for points of interest, it's of course not
possible to cover everything. So go on, drop me some suggestions and/or
your thoughts on what you would like to appear in this Round-up news
item in the following feedback thread.
