The villain is 27/22/AF2.0/3B:5, 53 hands

I normally fold preflop but I thought I had implied odds here due to ESS.

PokerStars - $0.50 NL FAST (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

Hero (BTN): 240.52 BB
SB: 170.62 BB
BB: 100 BB
UTG: 100 BB
MP: 100 BB
CO: 265.92 BB

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has 8:diamond: 9:club:

fold, fold, fold, Hero raises to 2 BB, SB raises to 8 BB, fold, Hero calls 6 BB

Flop: (17 BB, 2 players) 5:heart: 7:diamond: 7:club:
SB bets 5.34 BB, Hero calls 5.34 BB

Turn: (27.68 BB, 2 players) 6:spade:
SB bets 21.5 BB, Hero calls 21.5 BB

River: (70.68 BB, 2 players) 6:club:
SB bets 57.06 BB, Hero ? ?

By river, I'm going "What? What? What?" Can AA/KK/QQ do this?

ESS = effective stack size?
Do you not load off? I usually do 150bb.
SB has 4 combos of A6s, A7s that beat you plus 88+ (36 combos) that you beat plus some bluffs, I think you have to at least call.

He shouldnt have many 6x or 7x here, and yes AA KK QQ can do this imo.

Also the price is reasonable, for calling here. Its not like hes just jamming on the river.
Also 89 off is a fold preflop its too lose i think. But if you call hit the straight, call the turn, i think this river is a must call.

Pre-flop seems loose to call a 3bet with 98o. The rest seems fine. I would call the river as well with a bluff catcher. Especially against a aggressive villain.

Cheers,

I'm surprised no-one mentioned raising the turn.

But yeah, in reality this is a fold pre, I doubt I would even flat it without good reads on opponent.

Spots like this you need to call even if it means losing β€” for one thing, it reveals that you can raise 98o pre, which might mean your premium raises get paid more.

Raising the turn means that we don't give V a chance to continue bluffing, in case they are. Hand is very robust and needs no protection. We have position and can still get it in easily by the river if we just call.

fold pre, call river. villain should be value betting worse (overpairs) at enough frequency

Loose play preflop and on all streets. you are dominated with SB 3B range vs BU. 66, 77, A6, A7, A5.
On the turn you had to rerise, not only call.

i'd say it's a loose play, pre-flop. And no action on the turn :)

PF is so bad, don't use implied odds as an excuse to call such trash. The guy needs to be a complete buffoon to make it worth your while (+ 400-500BB ESS) + always paying off whenever you hit your straights. Not this very shallow 170BB stack size.

I don't think you need to fear 6X cos 6X usually checks Turn. So your main concern is 7X. Does he have enough air or QQ+ to play this way? I think yes so call.
