Hi,

so this is the thing I never understood. Suppose we are UTG and we have some good premium hands. Let's imagine AQs. We can open by min raise, standard raise, big raise.

The min raise obviously is not seems to be the best sizing because the villain has odds to see with his hands. Standard size , no question for that. But large size, they say it has its own problem. by making a big raise:

"We ensure that only good hands will bother to call our raise".

Ok so what is the issue with that? I mean we have a good hand UTG, if they have also a good hand they will call, if not they will not call. what is the issue for us? If the villain hands is good, it will obviously call the standard raise as well. so the sizing here does not change what the villain will do. he can flat AK to our AQs no matter it is 4BB or 5BB or 3BB.

I do not get the logic behind that.

When your size is large your range must be tight, you must protect your stack.

On the contrary when you expand your range you reduce your size because you receive:
-facing 3bet more frequently
- you need less FE
- pot control

From UTG and MP you can open 3x, co 2.5x and bu 2x.

If there are many fish you can increase your size and open fold marginal hands

A while ago one of the coaches used to split ranges.
For example,
if AA was A♣:A♦: he would min raise
if AA was A♠:A♥: he would raise 3.5x
If AA was anything else, he would raise 3x

I found it hard to remember what to do with what suits.

Another writer would change his open raise size by the second-hand on his clock:
0-5 seconds limp
5-20 seconds raise 2.5x
20-50 seconds 3x
50-59 seconds 3.5x

Another approach is to open-raise based on your opponents:
Raise more vs calling stations, less vs aggro players and so on

Me? I'm lazy. I just raise almost always 3x in cash games and early stage of tournaments.
mid stage of tournaments I drop to 2.2x
I'm almost never in the late stage, so I have no idea

We don't raise to get called by weaker hands, we raise to Steal the blinds !!

If they was no blind we would push AA and fold all others hands. UTG we can't steal to often because the probability of sucess is smaller so we have to do it with our stronger hands so we can open a bit larger.

AQs is not premium hand for me. When you guys watch high stakes tournaments like highrollers have you ever seen 3x from UTG ,no! This is about how you can deal with possibility of the hand postflop, so for me every open hand have same value ...

With TT+, would you want people to fold?

We raise to get better to fold (a bluff) or to get called by worse (betting for value)

We often say post-flop that we're betting "for protection", but that is just a value bet made to make sure that draws have poor direct odds to call.
