How NeckZ quit the family business to crush Spin & Go
We chat to a member from Brazil who followed his dream to be a professional player and is now beating $30 Spins.
Why did you join SpinLegends and what did you play before?
: I joined SpinLegends mainly to improve my game and to have a more professional approach to poker. Being part of a community that shares experiences, help each other and studies together is a huge opportunity, since there’s not much good content available about Spin & Go out there. Before, I used to play HUSNG Hypers at the $15 level, taking some shots at the higher limits. After this, I tried some Spins at different limits too.
You got from $1 to $30 Spins in five months, what adjustments did you make?
: Because I already had some HUSNG and Spin & Go experience before, the lower stakes were pretty easy for me. Following SpinLegends preflop charts, studying our postflop strategy and attending the coachings was more than enough to move to higher stakes without any problem. Once I moved to the Gold Team ($7-15 Spins) we received PT4 with a custom HUD. Using information provided by the HUD becomes very important, as does adjusting our game to the different types of players.
Once you understood the strategy was there much difference between $1, $3, $7, $15 and $30 stakes? When did they start getting tough?
: $1 and $3 Spins are pretty similar and both were very easy to beat. There are many crazy players who shove a very wide range with bad post flop skills. $7 players start to be slightly better, but still there are many fish. On $15 Spins things change a little bit, you start finding some regs on the tables, but still beatable for sure. Finally, at $30s the field is tougher, regs are way more common and to beat this level you should adapt your gameplay against them. Using a HUD wisely and making player notes is crucial so you can exploit villains’ weaknesses.

I hear you left your job when you got to the $30 Spins – was this a hard decision?
: Being a professional poker player has always been my dream. It was kind of hard to leave my job because I worked at my father’s company, which develops management software, both for the public and private sectors, and is one of the biggest companies of this type in the country. So, it was kind of expected by my family that I would continue the business and exercised my career in the company. On the other hand, they always knew that my dream was to turn myself into a professional player. After some time showing good results and proving that I was able to keep myself through it, I got their support.
Is poker harder now it is your only form of income?
: Poker has gotten harder over the years, no question about it. As time goes on, players are getting better. To remain profitable in poker, it is indispensable that you keep studying, reviewing your game, adapting against regs and so on, otherwise you will get passed by.
Before, I used to devote about 100 hours a month to poker. Now, I want to double it, turning in to 200 hours/month, making a mix of grinding, attending the coachings, studying and reviewing my game. Although I want to work harder to achieve my goals, poker gives you some flexibility, which provides more liberty to do whatever you want with the rest of your day, and that’s awesome.
Also, I invest in stocks and more recently, in cryptocurrencies. I don’t have great income in that yet, but I expect I will in the near future.

We have spoken to players from South America before and playing poker for a living means more to them because of their economies – what is it like in Brazil?
: Well, comparing the dollar with our coin, the dollar price is on average three times higher, so earning in dollars is good, no doubt. I think people have opportunities in many areas here in Brazil. Although we have political issues - bad government management - I think our country still has much room to grow.
What is the biggest mistake players make in Spins?
: Many players don’t have good post flop skills, and it costs them lots of money. One example is playing draws poorly. Also speaking of a game which you start with 25bb and get shorter quickly, some players don’t adjust well to that at all.
What are your long-term goals for the future?
: My medium-term goal is to be playing the $100 Spins. I aim to achieve this by the end of the year. My main long-term goal is to crush at the highest Spin & Go tables.
